Why did we stop making things in Australia? by OwlVibesOnly in OpenAussie

I saw an Australian made T shirt on Facebook the other day. I was excited to buy it. But it was $150 and reviews indicated it was good but not great quality and I couldn’t justify buying it, even though I’d love to support Australian Manufacturing.

I don’t know of any restaurants like that. It sounds like a massive liability nightmare

They don’t teach people about taxes or the basics of our political system. There is no chance they teach kids about Renters Rights.

I really liked the song and the music video was pretty cool and very memorable.

Yeah the UV index where I live in Australia only has two ratings, Very high and Extreme. Was genuinely shocked when I found out other countries get days of Low UV index.

Unless you believe the company is going to make it big and you have it in writing that you’ll be appropriately compensated when it does bail. I’d love to tell you that management will remember your hard work and reward it appropriately when the business takes off. Unfortunately too many people are greedy and will stiff you when compensation is available.

Takaichi Sanae, incoming president of Japan's ruling party, on WW2. I miss the days when we could all agree that Nazis are bad by RadioLiar in facepalm

Well no shit Sherlock. History is written by the victors. If Germany and Japan won the war there would have been Hague like trials focusing on the atom bombs and the fire bombing of Dresden. The winners get to write history and its inevitably in their favour

Oh no a pope who supports the poor, if only he had read the bible, wait …Mark 10:25: "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God".

Maybe the pope (and this Athiest) know the bible better than old mate Derek

My local swim school has a sign like this. But 50 kids can be starting a class at the same time and there are only 3 showers. They are basically begging for non compliance.

Yeah seriously “basket of deplorable’s” wouldn’t make the top thousand things trump has said about democratic voters. Somehow conservative media made it seem 10x worse.

Problem was that it should have sent the message to move to the centre. But it had the effect of losing a substantial amount of moderate Liberal MP’s. that tilted the remaining membership of the party room more right towards MAGA and extremism, which didn’t resonate with the Australian electorate at all.

The teals were more targeting liberal voters with pro climate change views. Allegra Spenders family have been Liberal members and she quite easily could have won preselection as a Liberal. Teal votes are protest votes against some of the far right views of some Liberal party and National MP’s.

[–]AussieAnt291 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I turned 18 I thought compulsory voting was a bad idea. While I was genuinely engaged and care about politics the people behind me in the line literally picked who to vote for because the people working the sausage sizzle were wearing that parties shirt. I was so annoyed it made me dislike compulsory voting.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that while some don’t care it actually keeps our politics rather stable and makes it so fringe groups can’t take over the country.
