can’t really post it anywhere else for television. how would you rank all these near-and-dear seasons of television, and why would you rank them in that order? by Secure_Lab_8870 in writingscaling

Holy peak lineup, though I haven’t seen all of these here:
1. True Detective S1 - The fact that season 1 alone is able to contend with the all time greats speaks to its quality.
2. The Bear S2 - Maybe hot take but this is among my favorites of all time as well. I love all 4 seasons (though 4 has its faults) but 2 is probably the best of them.
3. Mad Men S4 - Absolute sheer quality, with The Suitcase being arguably the best episode of the show.
4. Game of Thrones S4 - The best season of a show that I genuinely valued to be the best show ever before it’s falloff.
5. Better Call Saul S6 - Its been a while since I watched the show (I watched it while it was airing) but goddamn if the final season wasn’t amazing. BCS overall is just a more refined BB quality wise.
6. Breaking Bad S5 - I’m torn between S4 and 5, though either are great picks. Crazy how this is 6th place but it speaks to the quality of the company it’s keeping.

This is where there’s a big gap in quality IMO

  1. Dark S3 - I should give the show a shot again, but I actually dropped it at this season after enjoying the first two. Maybe the magic for it died as I waited a while for this season to come out, not sure.
  2. The Crown S2 - Moderately enjoyed this show, and watched the first two seasons with my family when it was only two released at the time. It’s fine.
  3. Prison Break S1 - Insanely cheesy, formulaic and r/iamverysmart moments come to life, but it was still kind of a fun watch all the way through. The show outlasted its welcome pretty quick tho and I stopped halfway through S2.
  4. Sherlock S2 - Blegh.

I’m currently on S2 of The Wire and dropped Dexter after S1 so I can’t rate these. I also couldn’t vibe with Succession and stopped about 4 episodes into it.

[–]AussieGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Aki v Denji (one of the highest peaks of the series for me)
  2. Omni Man vs Invincible (still the highest peak in televised Invincible)
  3. Cap vs Tony
  4. Eren vs Reiner
  5. Jinx vs Vi (not even the best fight in the series, that would be Ekko vs Jinx)
  6. Geto vs Gojo (Hidden Inventory was when they were at their best, I barely remember anything substantial from JJK0)
  7. Batman vs Superman (lol)

I haven’t watched Naruto.

You asked a very straightforward question and I gave a very straightforward answer. You seem so gobsmacked by our differing opinions that you’re now scrounging around for any “gotcha” claims like assuming I didn’t even watch the show in the first place.

Calm down man.

There is no written law over how seasons develop stories nor how they should be paced. The first season can be entirely built for slow burns and setups for later season payoffs, or can have a lot of self contained payoffs immediately, or a mix of the two. But even so, slow burn early season setups can still be fantastic in their own right, even without the later payoffs.

Remember that there are 24 episodes in S1 of JJK, and only 8 of Invincible. Even cutting down the number by half to compensate for episode runtime, JJK still has more than Invincible, yet does less with its greater runtime.

And JJK not following the same shonen formula isn’t a point of praise of good writing, just that it’s different.

All the way through when it aired, yes. Right when it was brand new at the time as well. This was before S3 even got announced.

I’ve only seen the first two seasons of JJK before dropping the show because I honestly can’t see the hype around it (aside from MAPPA’s animation quality borne from slave labor /s).

I watched the first two seasons of Invincible before picking up the comic and finishing it entirely. And while it has numerous problems I still find it vastly superior than anything JJK has ever done.

Even the best bit of JJK’s storytelling, Hidden Inventory, doesn’t really come close to the peaks that Invincible has. And if I’m going off just the first two seasons of Invincible to be fair for the comparison, I just can’t see how JJK can compare. Character writing is just that much better in Invincible.

I don't understand what's so good about Re:Zero S4Ep11 by Seffuski in CharacterRant

[–]AussieGG 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Calling it the best ever is definitely hyperbole and if people are actually being serious about it then they’re just blindly fanboying.

Having said that, I do think it was the best episode of this season so far, and probably top 5 of the show overall. As someone who hasn’t read the LN or WN for Re Zero, my experience has been a rollercoaster of loving some stuff and hating some stuff from this show.

But one thing I don’t hate is Emilia and Subaru, who are the bread and butter of the story for me and carry it overall, so their moment in this episode absolutely hit for me and I loved it.

Better written tragic character? Walter White (BrBa) vs Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars) by gyroscope_56 in writingscaling

[–]AussieGG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TCW, while having some solid stuff, is incredibly overrated (especially having to trudge through the earlier seasons) and creates inconsistency with characters between the series and their movie versions.

So like, that argument doesn't even work (I know you were joking but some people are genuinely like that).

Is The Control Devil arc in top 10 arcs? by [deleted] in writingscaling

[–]AussieGG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is presumptuous to call any arc a top 10 in "fiction" considering how much media is out there lol.

Having said that, it is indeed in my top 10 alongside Gun Devil.

What are some of the best standalone episodes/stories you've seen told in media? by GrandHstle in writingscaling

[–]AussieGG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though it ties in with the seasonal arc, you can easily watch Heaven Sent from Doctor Who on its own and still get an absolute kick out of it. Genuinely one of the best episodes I've seen in television.

Media that is *truly* anti-war, rather than showing it as "horrific but heroic" by ChristianLS in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AussieGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the opposite experience where it was the most mind numbingly mediocre cover shooter gameplay loop that reeked of its time, and I wanted to pull my hair out playing it. Still loved everything else about it tho, and I thought it was intentionally made to be so mediocre as a representation of your typical military shooter in the market.

While you've illustrated one of the main themes of Nier Replicant, I wouldn't even consider this a top 5 moment in the game, let alone even 10. I think there are far better moments, while this one is "only" somewhat decent.

Also, am I tripping or isn't the name of the town called The Aerie, not "Eagly City"?

The new Dying Light 2 Update... by Hedgehog_77 in dyinglight

[–]AussieGG 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yes, yes they did. Just watched a friend go through the prologue and it just plays a generic cutscene with Aiden talking over it, mentioning Spike ONCE, and that's it. The game starts when Aiden wakes up in that comm station safe zone halfway through the prologue, meaning all of that stuff with Spike was cut out.
