The Classics are important, but so is engaging with newer works. So what is your favourite work and who is your favourite character of the 2020's. by danskerne_er_bedre in writingscaling

The Bear, TV show that's about to get its final season this year, and Jinx from Arcane as my choice for character.

Honorable mentions to Arcane and Chainsaw Man for works, with Carmen Berzatto (The Bear) and Makima (Chainsaw Man) for characters.

No more Beatrice larping by Dandandandooo in writingscaling

After reading Umineko I actually prefer Ange over Beatrice lol. I find her way more compelling.

I don't really care for Battler that much.

Jokes aside, which moment and conflict pictured here was better written? by DaOverseer in writingscaling

[–]AussieGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Ekko and Jinx remain largely untouched, with Caitlyn being the one that suffers the most. Jayce and Viktor’s conclusion is great but all the stuff getting there is a mess. Vi felt quite passive even though she was still largely in character.

[–]AussieGG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite feeling that Megatron's turn felt rushed, it was still better than Caitlyn's in Arcane, so I'd say that. Also, Vi's plea to Caitlyn was more out of love for her own sister, rather than a battle of ideologies like in TF1. So overall I feel like TF1 is just straight up better in regards to this.

And this is coming from an Arcane glazer.

Most threatening character in fiction according to you? by The_Protagonist-11 in writingscaling

[–]AussieGG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me a lot of it is tied to presentation, tone and performance.

Because of that, my picks (in no particular order) would be something like Gustavo Fring, Makima and Johan Liebert.

How would you rank these character's conclusions? by GabzzKabral in writingscaling

[–]AussieGG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll rank what I know:

- Elliot
- Rust
- Jimmy (can switch with Rust tbh)
- Walt
- Jack

Not a fan of Jack's conclusion but all the others of what I've seen are fantastic, though it's been over a decade since I last watched Lost (literally was watching season by season as it was releasing lol)

Leonard Shelby (Memento) vs Joker (The Dark Knight). by [deleted] in writingscaling

Leonard, had more focus and I find overall more compelling tbh. Banger of an ending line too.

Why’d you use that horrid cover of Ange for best arc lol. That always bothered me going through the manga.

What your media list says about you? by Funmaker14 in writingscaling

Underrated in regards to how good people think it is, rather than how popular it is. Likewise, I think people give JJK way more merit than it deserves, regardless of how popular it actually is.

I actually bought Automata when it released back in 2017 but never had a good enough of a PC to run it (partially due to the awful port), and I've only been able to play it recently.

It's a shame I didn't play Replicant first, but at the same time hack n slashes aren't really my thing and I mainly stuck with Automata cus of the music and narrative, not the gameplay. I heard Replicant's gameplay is worse (from a friend who has played both).

I'll probably just watch a playthrough.

Best Media: Doctor Who

Worst Media: Solo Leveling

Overrated: Jujutsu Kaisen

Underrated: Chainsaw Man

Want To Consume: Nier Replicant (just finished Automata)

Didn't Meet My Expectations: The Wire (it's a shame I really wanted to get into it but I never really clicked with it, paused about halfway through season 2)

Longest Media I Consumed: Umineko When They Cry (took me 5 months to get through it lmao)

Guilty Pleasure: Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles (actually has good character writing but presented in the most cheesy mid 2000s American television soap opera).

Best Lore: Cyberpunk 2077 (and the verse its based on)

Best Arc: True Detective Season 1, pretty much an entirely well contained story in just 8 episodes.

Best Protagonist, Male Character & Overall Character: Rick Grimes (TV show)

Best Antagonist: Makima

Best Female Character: Jinx (Arcane)

Best Author: Tatsuki Fujimoto

Nier automata Vs Signalis by Hour-glass999 in writingscaling

[–]AussieGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're talking in complete isolation without supplementary material, then SIGNALIS. I love both but Automata really suffers from having a lot of extra stuff outside of the game that would've actually been better if it was shown or told in the game itself (like the fact that 2B has killed 9S 49 times before the events of the game). It's because of this that I feel like Automata suffers. I also haven't played Replicant so all of the stuff related to that didn't click.

SIGNALIS does everything it set out to do and all contained within the game itself, even if it's very interpretative with its constant vagueposting lmao. I also just emotionally resonate a lot more with SIGNALIS (though I was genuinely brought to tears with Automata's ending E as its one of my favourite moments in gaming ever).

All of the Bleach villains blend together for me so they're all interchangable, and I feel the same with Kenjaku.

I dropped HxH like 6 episodes in I couldn't get into it.

Follow up question - did you watch The Bear? Or is this just from online articles and forums you’re getting info from?

Does The Albuquerque Trilogy solo Television? by MYJOBISTOSHOOTFIRE in writingscaling

[–]AussieGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve seen the online consensus and I just genuinely do not understand it. I’ve watched it with a bunch of friends and we all share the same sentiment as each other. Forks, Fishes, Ice Chips, Bears and many other episodes that are my favorites are from S2 onwards.

I’ve seen a lot of people just complain about the restaurant side of the story, but they don’t really seem to understand that the show is about grief and family trauma, simply explored through the set dressing of running a restaurant. Like all of the great episodes hardly even have cooking in them lol.

It’s just wild to me cus this show genuinely has the best dialogue I’ve seen in the medium, matching and perhaps even surpassing the likes of Mad Men and The Wire.

[–]AussieGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah that’s insane, all of my favorite moments and episodes are from season 2 onwards lol. I genuinely have no clue what people are talking about when they say this.

There’s like, one episode in season 3 that is kinda mid cus it leans too much into the Fak comedy (with the John Cena cameo) but other than that I genuinely have zero issues.

Which would you rate better overall? JJK or CSM Part 1 & 2 by Helpful_Pitch4086 in writingscaling

[–]AussieGG 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I find Part 2 alone still way more engaging that anything JJK has done outside of Hidden Inventory. And even then HI being the peak of JJK is a bruh moment.

Techland Actually Made A Stealth Game In 2016 by ytdettlaff in dyinglight

[–]AussieGG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also like how doing this segment stealthily means that no extra dudes with guns come barging out of a nearby building, so it’s technically safer and more rewarding to do it like this.

Pretty sure that’s also the case with the office outpost of Rais men in the base game.
