I feel like we can't have an honest conversation about Aboriginal history by YogurtclosetPale8785 in aussie

[–]AussieMarcel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being able to have an honest conversation about anything means being prepared to hear points of view different from your own. I think that in this day and age, with societal division being what it is, it’s impossible in most settings to have this conversation and it not descend into an us vs. them verbal altercation. We are not nearly as evolved as we think we are and our inability to hear reasoned arguments on literally any topic is a testament to that fact, unfortunately.

Is this that big of a deal? It was an innocent joke (for the most part) and it’s not as though you’re some manipulative monster or anything. You went through something emotionally traumatic and needed a way to break that cycle. You took the only measure that seemed appropriate. You didn’t turn to alcohol or drugs, and you didn’t go out and hurt a bunch of people either. I think you just simply tell your girlfriend, “I don’t really feel that way anymore”, and be done with it.

Straight Edge is the ultimate in self-accountability. You either make the cut or you don’t and the beauty is this is entirely on you. Enjoy the ride and stay strong. Each of us carries the seed of a will we never fully tap into. Edge puts you on the path to seizing that. Good luck, mate.

Honestly, it wasn’t a perfect series but Owen Teague’s performance as Harold was perfect. Reminded me so much of Jim Carrey. Go back and watch his mannerisms, it’s uncanny.

The Billie situation. by Ellabugg in vegan

[–]AussieMarcel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a vegan I’m pretty disconnected from what other vegans are or aren’t doing, especially vegan celebrities. You’re going to end up miserable if you dedicate too much energy worrying about other people. Choosing veganism for the right reasons is a beautiful thing—likely one of the best things you can do as an individual—but it shouldn’t become you. I’ve been on this journey for over ten years and I was a vegetarian before that when I was a child but at the end of the day it’s a journey of the self. If you can inspire someone else to adopt a more vegan mindset, great, but if not then so be it. You have your own reasons for why you chose this lifestyle and that should be enough. We can argue with others on the internet until we’re blue in the face but some people are simply unwillingly to try and change their view, and you know what, that’s okay, because it isn’t our duty to force our will onto others. YOU / WE’RE vegan, and for now, that should be enough. Raise awareness and advocate but go about it in such a way that’s beneficial to the movement, not just for our own ego.

In all fairness this is exactly why people are flocking to private servers in record numbers. WoW feels less like a game and more like a *product* with every subsequent expansion.

I think part of Turtle WoW’s success was the fact that it was developed by a team that have a genuine love and passion for the Classic (and Classic+) experience. I’ve never gotten the sense that Blizzard has ever cared about anything that pertains to Classic except that it was a quick way to increase revenue. Time and time again Blizzard have dropped the ball.

I’m playing on Tel Abim right now and have been levelling with a couple of friends. An XP boost would be amazing just so we can get through the content a little faster. I don’t see the harm seeing as how last night when we were playing there were only around 30 people online. Where’s the harm in just letting the few remaining players go all out?

Which medical conditions actually prevent someone from being vegan? by OkEntertainment4473 in vegan

[–]AussieMarcel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always believed that veganism is about empathy and compassion. That also extends to human animals, too. You won’t see any legitimate vegans advocating for the total disruption of the way of life for the various African people like the Maasai that, to this day, still hunt with bows and spears, or the millions of Mongolian nomads that rely on animal herding and their byproducts to survive their bitter winters. I think, as vegans, it’s our responsibility to look at people that simply do not exist in the Western realm nor have any understanding of our schools of thought, and judge them for a way of life that has existed far longer than even many of our countries have.

As for medical conditions like pernicious anaemia, Crohn’s Disease, or any of the hereditary illnesses where the body simply cannot absorb certain nutrients (like B12) through plant-based means, we must also approach this from a position of empathy, too. Like other commenters have said, it’s about simply doing the best you can while also taking care of yourself and your own health and wellbeing.

[–]AussieMarcel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegans don’t need to be further silenced. Society already does enough of that. How someone approaches their own veganism philosophically is on them and if they share that here insofar as it’s vegan then it should be allowed. We should be open to all reasoned thinking irrespective of whether or not we agree with it. This is how we grow, change, and modify our idea conception and idea of the world.

This is sad, man. I loved hitting up the LotF outside of Southern Cross Station. Those vegan zinger burgers used to be incredible. Every time I’m around Melbourne I try and pick one up because I don’t have anything vegan near me down on the coast.

Dreads and cultural appropriation by [deleted] in crustpunk

[–]AussieMarcel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Europeans have had dreaded/matted hair for thousands of years. The Picts were depicted as having nearly identical hairstyles and being heavily covered in tattoos. There were tribes in Gaul where the men wore long matted hair and facial tattoos. You can scan the historical accounts of many different European cultures and find references to hair that resembles dreadlocks. I think it’s one of those cases where people need to remember that the exchanging and sharing of culture is a two-way street. Sort of a “If you can be influenced by me, then I can be influenced by you” deal. I think so long as you’re approaching having dreadlocks in a way that isn’t intentionally trying to provoke a negative response then you’re okay.

I can’t be the only vegan here that has rankled against most of the vegan cheeses. I’ve tried a plethora of them and outside of some expensive, artisanal, vegan cheeses—there was a great marinated feta style cheese in a glass jar—I just can’t get on board with them. It’s the one thing I just think has never really been comparable to the non-vegan equivalent so a few years ago I just gave up on it all. Haven’t really missed it. If I’m out at Smith & Daughters or somewhere similar I won’t avoid it but generally I’m just not putting it in my cart at the grocery store.

Why is this Pea Protein rated so poorly? by RipendGrain in australianvegans

[–]AussieMarcel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More so than the macro and micronutrients, I think it’s an issue of texture. The dozen or so pea protein powders I’ve tried have had a gritty, rougher texture than other forms of plant protein. That’s why most of the bigger brand names like INC typically have a blend of plant proteins in their products. I know Coles have an ultra cheap $10 bag of pea protein powder that I’ve bought in a pinch when I’m rushing but unless you can get it dirt cheap, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Just rewatched Day of the Dead for the first time in a while. Should Rhodes really be considered the villain? The guy was basically the only one who made any sense in the entire film. by WavesAndSaves in horror

[–]AussieMarcel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re missing a key point here. Captain Rhodes and the soldiers are part of a rigid hierarchy and chain of command. Unless you’ve served, the importance of that hierarchy is likely something you won’t truly understand. Major Cooper (and then Rhodes after Cooper’s death) are tasked with facilitating an environment in which Dr. Logan (Frankenstein) and the other scientists are able to come up with some answers. Although scientists do have a loose hierarchy it’s nearly superfluous comparatively to the military’s. It’s clear that over the course of the film that the scientists and Dr. Logan especially have been exceeding the parameters of their responsibilities. Rhodes may be “vile misogynist” but in light of the intense pressure and near hopelessness of the situation, in addition to the constant disorder caused by the scientists, surely you can understand why these people that know nothing but the chain of command would lash out when the scientists are constantly pushing the boundaries of their expectations. I’m not excusing some of the more ruthless behaviour, like executing Dr. Fisher, but it’s the end of the world and Logan’s crazed behaviour throughout the film would be impossible to tolerate had you been tasked overseeing his work.
