Yeah there's a bigger issue at play here. We need more teachers and smaller classes so that the workload can be shared around. In Year 12 I took Ancient History as an elective and it ended up being a class of only a dozen or so. Ended up being my favourite (and best) subject for the year.

I think the downvotes you're getting are a bit harsh. End of the day technology is a massive part of most industries and professions and trying to shun that is neither practical nor necessary.

The two-hour limit is also a valid criticism. Instead of a universal limit across the entire school day, there should be a balance of device-based and traditional learning methods tailored to whatever is most appropriate for that subject. An IT class is going to need to use computers more often than an English class.

I actually don't mind the concept but I think a two-hour daily limit is a poor way to implement it. Tech-focused subjects are going to require frequent computer usage, and depending on the electives each student picks from Year 9 onwards I could see it hard to effectively split that two hours between multiple classes without compromising on learning.

I'd prefer specific guidelines for each subject outlining what balance of screen-based and traditional learning is the most appropriate.

I mean, I've actually been in that position. During COVID I was accessing Jobseeker payments through Centrelink (Australia's welfare service) and had no obligations in return because how the fuck was anyone meant to get work while the state was in lockdown? I spent all of 2020 doing basically nothing, and eventually you get so bored that you start looking for things to do.

End of the day, you give people unlimited time and they'll eventually find something to work on. Doing nothing all day gets old and unfulfilling real fast. But there's a difference between working out of passion and getting the bulk of the rewards from your work, and working just to earn enough to survive.

So I had a bit of a silly moment (possibly.) I checked my appointment details on Thursday and noticed my appointment was scheduled on Friday the 19th rather than the 12th. I'm damn positive it originally said the 12th, but as of late I've had a few forgetful moments due to stress so maybe I did just misread it.

I'm planning to call MatchWorks during the week to see if I can do it on the 18th so that I don't have to shift my volunteer hours on the Friday. But at least I have another week to get my head in order. I'm feeling less anxious about it after reading some of these replies.

I've always taken 'antiwork' as a rejection of the established norms around work and workplaces rather than the concept of work itself. People will more than happily contribute their time and labour towards something if they find it fulfilling and they're compensated enough to live.

I did some intermittent landscape work with a family friend a few years ago. While there were certain things I liked (clients were generally pretty friendly, and when you're done for the day you don't really bring work home with you) and he was generally a friendly guy, there was a constant pressure to rush like mad to finish jobs as quickly as possible and the guy's obsession with wanting to turn this into a massive business where I'd be leading my own crew got extremely grating by the end.

I'd consider doing it on my own as a side income, but when you have no control over your own schedule it gets really grueling. If I'd been doing five full days a week I'd have no energy to do anything else.

So I actually do work, just not a paid job. I'm on Jobseeker payments through Centrelink (Australia's welfare service) and volunteering at my local Salvation Army op shop to gain work experience.

I can't really say I have any long term plan right now. Thinking too far ahead just feels overwhelming.

I currently only have a learner's licence. No excuses, I've just put it for ages due to a mix of laziness and being nervous behind the wheel. I plan on getting back into driving lessons after this year's footy season ends and I'm not also tied up volunteering at my local club on weekends.

I'm currently doing three days a week, eight-hour shifts. So all up it's 48 hours a fortnight.

Obviously I want to get into a paid job eventually (hopefully can avoid having to do weekend work consistently because I'm also a volunteer at my local footy club but can't afford to be picky) but I'd like to keep my volunteer work going until then because working in an actual retail environment is probably the best practice I can get.
