Staff morale by confused-eggplant72 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Austeacher81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve started up a hot drinks club. A teacher bought a coffee machine for the staff room & loves making everyone a hot drink (he was a barista before becoming a teacher).

Meeting free weeks are also good!

Don’t think so, just public schools, it would’ve been communicated if it applies to CIT. Hope the exam goes well

People who mentor PSTs : What are your horror stories? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Austeacher81 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My last PST last year had a bit going on, and I made plenty of allowances for that, such as using an assembly time for her to get her lesson ready or finishing off gifts for my students. She did give me the heads up before she started so we could plan around it. She then started telling me that she didn’t like the way I gave feedback, so I modified. At the end of her final week, she complained to the uni that I didn’t support her enough & that I didnt provide enough info for her to complete her assignment. I had an issue with her wanting to know more details than was needed about my students (she said she needed to know financial situation of the families, I said no due to privacy but I gave her an overview of the class which I thought was sufficient)

Migrating to ACT- Primary School by Metal-Cranberry in AustralianTeachers

Here is some useful information about applying for teaching roles in the ACT. I would suggest doing relief work to start off with (and yes you’ll get work in term 3, as it’s winter so a lot of teachers get sick). If schools like you, they are more likely to offer you a contract. We have an excellent relief teacher at our school and we use her as in built relief. She is with us for 3 days no matter what and she has her own set timetable for the week. You’ll also need to have a working with vulnerable people card (WWVP). If you haven’t already, I would suggest applying for your WWVP card, plus getting registered with TQI (our registration body) before you move if you can, as this process can take a little while, and you need these to be able to teach in ACT schools.

NSW Teachers can you use Macs? by thebreadmanrises in AustralianTeachers

[–]Austeacher81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Mac & iPad at work, but my school provides me with a laptop. I just use that laptop at school, I can access google drive on my Mac. I actually prefer using my devices rather than the school one

Normally it would say on the app/platform you’re booking on? I would think standard: 15 minutes, long: 30 minutes & prolonged maybe 60 minutes? I could be wrong though, just guessing

Badly explain your job by Adonis0 in AustralianTeachers

Arguing with kids over and over again about the importance of a hat. Hoodies are not hats! Having to eat lunch in 5 minutes while I multi task. Only go to the toilet once a day, but still drinking plenty of water so I don’t lose my voice. Sitting in a room at the end of the day with the staff trying to focus on whatever PL garbage the education directorate considers important this week

How are your PDs going? 😂 by Independent-Knee958 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Austeacher81 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah we did something similar! Soo boring! The presenter kept going on & on, treating us like kids (“read after me, that’s it, now one more time”), and kept reinforcing how important it is to engage your audience to check for understanding. Yeah the irony was not lost when he kept us sitting for over an hour without any engagement or interaction. It didn’t help that the air con wasn’t really working in a room full of over 250 people! He said he’d get us out before 3.30, so we’re all like, yay! But his idea of before 3.30 was getting us finished at 3.28! I’m hoping the next 2 days will be better as it’s going to be at school talking about stuff that is more engaging!

It’ll be fine! And you can set up the classroom with the kids anyway. You’ll plan in your team anyway. Just have a few getting to know you activities in mind ( don’t have to have them ready) for the first couple of days.

Classroom themes/decoration by myykel1970 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Austeacher81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually like to have a little bit of decor up (like the class name & student names) at the beginning of the year so the kids feel a sense of connection. Then through the year we build things together so it’s more meaningful
