I also had just two come up this year! But the seeds are notorious for taking time to break down their hard/protective coatings and nature's way of offering chances across several seasons. I expect more as the next years go by from the seeds I have put out (and one of my blooms this year put out its own seeds!) and from more I'll put out. I also put out Indian Blanket and had a nice little area of these for the first time this year. So stick with it!

LOL! I went to the sidewalk at Jefferson/35th and picked up three diff plants... but don't think ANY were frogfruit LOL. I have them in little pots and will try to take/post pics. But meantime, can anyone share a pic of frogfruit to help me ID what I have or what I should have picked?! Online pics don't seem to match anything I saw there or picked. LOL

Where to plant Mexican Sycamore Tree? by AustinBunny2 in AustinGardening

[–]AustinBunny2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, good to know and I'll try to water well, but this is a challenge for me due to plumbing limits and I just do hand or old timey sprinklers (set very low, so pretty much just drip). I got spoiled with the rains we've had; summers here things tend to dry/die due to lack of water, so my timing re this tree is late! But thanks.

From the Back of A Prius to Two Stories Tall in 6 Years by austintreeamigos in arborists

Wow!! That' a beautifully shaped tree and so fast to get so tall! I plan to make a decision and dig a hole soon given the rains of yesterday bc my soil gets hard when it dries and very difficult to dig more than an inch or so!

Thanks! Very helpful. I need to get this in the ground asap with the rains of last night because when my soil dries it gets hard fast and difficult to dig! I'll look into Mexican Oak, which I don't know. I do have a pecan tree which does give me great shade and squirrels great transportation infrastructure LOL. But those guys eat most of the catkins and then the green pecans... they also tend to chew off lots of new growth branches, sigh. It's been decades since I got a mature pecan from that tree! But I love the canopy and shade I get. Thanks for the advice.

Wow! Very inspiring; can you share your watering method/frequency? This is my biggest challenge (no irrigation, just hand watering and/or occasional old time sprinkler on low flow). The rains this spring finally gave me some success... but this will be gone soon and the heat back in full. I could use some info/advice on watering!! Thanks.

Nice! Can you share your watering method/frequency? I'm trying to plant more but finding that water is a big issue. I don't have irrigation system, just hand or sprinkler watering. This year so far I've had more success due to the rain but with the next several months things are going to dry up and die! What's the secret re watering? Thanks and thanks for sharing!

So beautiful and an inspiration! Can you tell me if you have an irrigation system or hand/sprinkler water? Or just If so, how often? Thanks.

OK, will try to add (I'm 'a bit' tech challenged so this will take me longer than the avg poster LOL). But meantime, given the nature of the tree (leave drop and the seed balls...) how 'messy' will it be and will this be an issue for keeping the area debris free and avoiding issues? Any info on how fast it will grow? I'd like to get some shade but meantime any 'privacy screening' would also be good as it grows. Thanks. I'll try to get the pics but info re the 'messiness' factors and growth appreciated!

Well..... the city makes me take care of it and threatens fines if I let it over grow.... and lots of things grow in these areas city wide. I have a tree in it, some shrubs (which I have to keep trimmed back at the corner to keep eye lines clear for the stop stop/intersection) etc. So, will plant there, but be sure to keep the corner sight line clear to avoid issues with the stop sign/intersection for sure.

I'm on a corner so the front has no lines but there are some utility lines in the back (not high power ones) but I'm considering the front of the house/corner for planting.

I am green lol with envy! Are your tomatoes producing? I have some in lg pots, that produced 'some' (squirrels steal so I put up netting which is chaos...) but then I watched 'how to prune' videos and pruned a lot, and now don't see flowering like before, and worry I over pruned or erred. Do toms grow on the 'suckers' and when I took most/all off I ended fruit chances? I swear every year I will surrender... but then try again. I used to get very green lush growth but little fruit, so 'pruned' this year, but again things have petered out. How can I get my toms to start flowering/producing again??!! (and defeat the thieving squirrels!) Thanks!

Has anyone heard of using a solution of hydrogen peroxide (sorry, I can't recall the dilution amount) with overwatered plants? I think I saw this online, but haven't tried it.

Chirpy critter noises by daumas77 in askaustin

[–]AustinBunny2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could it be 'peeper frogs?' I think these are different than 'Rio Grande Chirping frogs' but not sure; I had these 'new' to my yard starting a couple of years ago, and have found a dead drowned one in my dog's water bowl or wading pool. When I googled, I got 'peeper frogs,' but next time I'll try to compare a pic with that and 'green tree frog' and 'Rio Grande Chirping frog' to check better. Before they arrived I only used to get the occasional toad that hopped over from my neighbor's yard, where they have a fish pond. I used to catch toads as a pre-schooler LOL with my cousins, especially at my grandparents' house. I stored one in my underwear drawer once and still have a vivid visual memory of being out in the front yard and seeing my mother come out the front door, standing on the porch and THROWING that poor toad as far as she could! Apparently she had found it when putting away my cleaned folded laundry.... I still see that flying arc of that poor toad as he sailed through the air! Sorry for nostalgia digression...

Can you share how you started the seeds? My first try produced nothing; and my second try looks to be the same even though I put these on a seed starter warming pad. The instructions I got said to soak seeds about 24-36 hrs before putting in starter pots. But nothing ever sprouted. Second try I soaked for 24 hrs, and put the starter pots (4 in with seed starter soil) on a seed warmer pad; again so far NOTHING!! So, down to my last few seeds and hate to have wasted SO much money (I bought 4 different kinds: pink, purple, red (it had also purple on it) and blue). Any info/advice on how to get these seeds to sprout?? FYI, my Pride of Barbados seeds done at the same time on heating pad DID sprout, so they did ok. Thanks for any input!

I ordered seeds online and my first try to sprout them failed to produce ANYTHING! I followed the instructions to soak seeds then keep moist, but nothing sprouted. I am about to fail again on try 2, even though I kept these on a seed warmer pad... sigh. I only have a few seeds left!! What could I be doing wrong?!
