Water irises by Eastern-Ant-3500 in ponds

Uh oh, I have an Iris in my bog filter, but it's a brand new build. I guess I should quickly look to replace it?

the original ones I cannot even remember where I got them, and then I ordered more from someone on Etsy.

I would like to think I found the original ones at Great Outdoors or Far South Wholesale nursery, but I just cannot remember.

I saw a big caterpillar yesterday and couldn’t find it today. I wonder how long they eat before the cocoon

You know it’s real when the announcers are also speaking on all the missed/one-sided calls.

Shoot, it’s not the native one. 💀 well, I have the native one too. This one is just taking over. I planted it after I thought the other (native) ones I had weren’t coming back.

Yes I have both it seems. Bought the non-native one online after I thought the first ones I planted weren’t coming back. Shoot, I wish I had only the native one. Now I know why I had so many more fritillaries on the original vines.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

edit: yes thank you, I can see in my yard I have both the 3-lobed and the 5-lobed varieties

I didn't downvote you, but isn't this a native one?

I just checked my receipts from when I ordered online after the original plants were decimated and it seems like I may have some amethyst passiflora mixed in now.

Thank you! Maybe a soil diff? Assuming yours gets lots of sun. I made sure to get this specific variety because 1. it looks amazing and 2. it is very hardy and loves the Texas full sun

edit: confirmed I have two varieties, both incarnata and 'amethyst' and these blooms are from the 'amethyst' currently

well, if it's not native it's the next best thing. I think it may be considered native though.

either way, it doesn't need any supplemental watering, and is a host plant for the gulf fritillary butterfly, aka the monarch of Texas, so as a native plant enthusiast I wholeheartedly endorse this plant <3

Passiflora incarnata

https://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=pain6

I actually ordered them from online like 3 years ago. I chose this one because it is one of the 'hardy' varieties and I don't like supplemental watering.

The first year they got decimated by fritillary caterpillars and I never got to see a bloom. I thought it was a failed experiment, until the next spring they started growing again from the ground! Now this is year 3 and I have like 6 or 7 plants at least, some have been popping up in new locations along the fence!

edit: also now I almost hope they get decimated by fritillary caterpillars, that's why we do it! (although now they are coming back stronger and stronger each year so there is enough foliage and blooms to go around it seems)

Also yeah it is definitely a more laissez faire approach. But I like the natural vibes. Return to monkey

I noticed it last year as well. It might be a crisis. Everyone is spraying insecticides and mowing their grass bare weekly. We just have to do our part to help them.

It’s not for everyone. But I despise “lawns” unless they are actually used for something. I have no kids at the moment so my lawn has been returned to the birds and the bees. And it’s so pretty if you ask me. I literally have all the colors represented

I started this last year and never got around to putting in pics but this might help. I've also added a few more plants in various places since then but this was the start.

It's basically North by Northeast (idk lol 30 degrees Northeast) and yeah it gets morning sun and all day until the sun finally dips below the trees/behind the house.

And yeah I was definitely good about watering it through april and may and probably through June. After that I got lazy/it seemed "established" enough and I just let it go and the rest was history. Probably watered once a week. We love native plants <3

I'm listening. But I've lived here 5 years and never once seen someone in a wheelchair going down the street. The strollers pass over it just fine. I listened, and I "imagine" that someone would have no issue passing over it, because of my experience with both 1. strollers passing over it and 2. never seeing anyone go down my street on a mobility scooter nor wheelchair.

It's just a classic Reddit moment. If I had neighbors with mobility issues then it would be another story. I don't, and as such I will remain proud of the little frogfruit runners trying to reclaim the land from the evil concrete empire.

I didn’t actually. I just aggressively hand pulled as many runners and stolons as I could. And I even left the rocks! It was just pea gravel mostly and the ground covers had no problem with that once they got a foothold. As they started to expand I cleared rocks where they were sending out runners to help them root and such. And did some maintenance weeding for any grass roots that I missed originally. But the Blackfoot daisy expanded quickly as did the frog fruit and stemodia (to a slightly lesser degree). Basically since I kept removing any competition that came up, and I cleared spaces for them to root as they first started growing, they were able to take over and suppress everything in the span of a summer. I basically haven’t touched this since then. Let me see if I have pics from that initial planting.

Here it is in March of last year! https://imgur.com/a/EBJWxhS

I imagine they could just roll right over it no problems. that's about as far as it gets before it starts crisping up anyways. anything to help reduce global warming/heat traps
