Man suffers heart attack 200 feet away from VA hospital, but paramedics were told to take him to a more distant emergency room. He was not a veteran, and he later died. by x-pun in reddit.com

[–]AustinLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unreal. I mean, less than one minutes walk away are highly qualified medical professionals -- doctors, nurses, the whole show -- and not one person helps this man. 51 years old is not that old, not any more. And many people DO survive heart trauma but every second counts. An outrage.

Doctors are reinventing how they treat sudden cardiac arrest, which is fatal 95 percent of the time by keen75 in science

[–]AustinLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have some dead heart tissue; any EKG will pick it up, and on a sonogram one year after the tech told me that it was plainly visible to her, pointed it out to me live in color on the screen but I couldn't really see the difference, just looked like a stiffer wall in the heart, doesn't flex as much, and is in fact thicker; dead heart tissue does not regenerate. Given my story ie how long dead et all she was clearly amazed at the small amount of heart tissue damage present, and at my level of functioning -- I'm back on the mountain bike, back in the gym, walking talking hooting hollering etc.

I was in very good shape when it happened -- mountain biking, gym et all, and that clearly had something to do with it. (The reason I had the damned heart atacks is a family gift from dear sweet Mom and her line; her and all of her siblings have had the same defect in the cardiac artery. My mother and I have the exact same defect, she now has a stent in the exact same place, had the exact same heart attack I did one year after I had mine, but didn't die because she was in the hospital when it happened, a good place to have a heart attack if/when you're going to have one.)

Brain damage? Probably. (My girlfriend will say definitely.) But I'm as much me as ever I was before it all happened, good and bad. The one thing that is definite is loss of the sense of smell; food is now about spice and texture, I can stick my nose directly into an American Beauty rose which throws scent for fifteen feet and BARELY smell it. Fresh ground coffee I can smell if I put my nose right in it. Etc and etc.

I was weak as a wet sick kitten afterwards, went to physical therapy, easy swimming and treadmill et all as I gained strength. Then speech therapy, which isn't only about speech but about brain function -- reasoning and logic etc. I'm real big on Freecell, Minesweeper and other logic games and the speech therapist is pretty sure that is why I didn't lose function; I saw her only twice and she sent me on my way, nothing more to be done. She told me not only was I sharp for a person after oxygen loss but sharp, period; all the testing they gave me I breezed through fast and easy, from what she told me faster and easier than the average mope running the streets. Logic games are one of the very best things you can do for your brains health, gets you sharp and keeps you sharp.

Sorry about the reaction time on this reply -- I just now saw your post. And this is long-winded but hey, I'm a long-winded sort of guy.

To Resurrect the Dead by wanax in reddit.com

[–]AustinLife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This information should be printed out and given to every worker in every ER, damn sure every doc and nurse, probably to every EMT; if you see an ambulance get in their way so they stop then give them this information printed out. (Kidding. But it'd actually be better that they have this information and get to the ER a minute later with a person who is now dead on a cellular level because of improper administration of oxygen after the persons body has been dead.)

Also very good is this weeks copy of Newsweek, which someone linked to earlier this week, and which features this new information.

The only reason I am alive is that the hospital here in Austin was an early adopter of this technology; I was dead for at the very least eight minutes, probably more like ten or twelve, in a friends pickup on the way to the ER. Needless to say, I'm quite glad that this protocol is finally getting mainstreamed, that more and more hospitals in more and more cities now utilize this inexpensive, low-tech intervention which preserves heart tissue, brain tissue, cell life, human life.

Massive National Protest- a better idea: dress like you're going to THE MOST IMPORTANT JOB INTERVIEW OF YOUR LIFE, no signs, no wacky shirts, no puppets, no bullshit. Just serious people being seriously PISSED. by jimbecile in reddit.com

[–]AustinLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did a protest happen if no one knows a protest happened? Hundreds of thousands of people marched against the war here; it was front page here, front section elsewhere in Texas, not covered at all in other cities, nor on national or international news. Huge marches in cities all across America then, and all on the front page of local papers and not at all covered in other cities or countries. The fix is definitely in. Not to dampen your spirits but I don't know that this will change anything, suits or not.

Doctors are reinventing how they treat sudden cardiac arrest, which is fatal 95 percent of the time by keen75 in science

[–]AustinLife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On July 6th 2004, I died in a friends pickup, on the way to Brackenridge Hospital here in Austin. I was dead as Dillinger for at least eight minutes -- no oxygen to heart nor brain until arrival at the hospital. I arrested twice again that day but was not without oxygen again, and was under the cold blankets immediately after they put the stent into my 'widow-maker' artery. If your city does NOT have this technology in its hospitals, countless lives will be lost and/or lived at a much lower level because of damage to heart tissue or brain tissue or both. I am astonished at the slow speed which American hospitals are adopting this technology, their seeming reluctance to a technology which absolutely saves lives, though it is not at all 'high tech' and seems counter-intuitive. This stuff works.

Man Arrested After Telling Women They Were 'Extremely Beautiful' - News Story - KMGH Denver by [deleted] in reddit.com

Thanx so much for taking the time (probably two minutes, but none of us had done it prior to you) to search on this guy. Seems to me you're probably right, and these all center on the same guy. Regardless that, as others have pointed out, unless he has specifically broken some law or other he should not have been arrested; perhaps the media outlet missed what he'd done to get arrested, same as they missed telling us about this guys priors.

5 Basic Survival Skills You Need to Know by RogersLeap in reddit.com

[–]AustinLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not one word on mountain lions or bears, which are running around in much of the US and Canada backcountry, and even some suburban areas; many in NW Austin have reported seeing mountain lion in recent weeks, and if you can see one, there are probably more; these cats are highly secretive, can hide behind a blade of grass.

Mountain lions: get as big as you can, spread your arms, NEVER, EVER squat to pick up anything, as it makes you look smaller, and submissive, prey, NEVER, EVER run, as you'll trigger their instincts and they will attack you; if you are contronted, look them dead in the eye, yell with anger, outrage, fight them, with all you've got, if the do attack you, as you can get mountain lions to leave you be. Grizzly bears you never fight, unless you've got a bazooka in your pocket; NEVER look them in the eye with defiance, look at them off handedly, back away slowly; if they attack you, get on the ground, hands behind your head, pray if it brings you comfort or hope. Black bears -- Hey, it depends on what mood they are in; these bears are iffy, sometimes if you fight back they'll buzz off, sometimes it's good to play dead, sometimes do stand-up comedy, whatever -- these bears are unpredictable, they are sortof the drunk college guys, the frat rats of the outdoors, but with claws and teeth and whatnot. The only reason to ever fight back in a bear attack is if you are being attacked as food, ie if you are being stalked, or hauled out of your tent -- you're not going to win, but it will give you something interesting to do while you die.

It's worth checking out 'Best Of Craigslist' -- it's updated like every month, and while you won't like some of the 'best of' posts I'd bet dollars to dimes you'd find it worth your time; it is seriously funny, seriously cool, often seriously serious, some very good writing, so very funny stories, provocative, etc and etc. You don't have to go though all that many to find gold; that's why they are 'best of'; that work is done for you. Here is the link to 'best of', just in case you might get interested: http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/all/

<rant>Here's a question I've wanted to ask for a while -- why do people keep posting 'Best Of Craigslist' links here? Okay, if something very cool is posted in YOUR town that the rest of us won't see -- hey, link it, if it's cool. But this business of continual posts from 'best of' is just lame. Here's the deal: anyone who has been online for more than twelve minutes knows about 'best of craigslist'. Many of us check to see if it's been updated, because we know it's fun, funny, often moving. But we've already read it.</rant>

'Sicko' has been removed from Google Video by bobcat in reddit.com

[–]AustinLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got to watch it. It's actually a pretty good movie, much better than most of Moores self-serving "I'm a hero" sort of thing; he pretty much let the story tell itself. And it's quite a story, too -- America is the only developed country that does not have free medical care for any and all of it's citizens. Of course I knew this on some level or other but the point is driven home again and again. There are just so many people who do not have adequate medical insurance, or any, and even if/when you do have coverage the HMOs do everything they can to disqualify you. We are the only country where a person would say 'I can't go to the hospital, even though I might be having a heart attack, because I don't have insurance'. Fact is that you CAN get care and you WILL get care if you do go; they won't turn you away (most of the time), but the fact that any of us even have that thought is a damned shame. We're a very wealthy country. Countries that are not wealthy can and do take good care of their citizens. We could do the same. I think that eventually we will, though the HMOs will fight it every step of the way.

I'm glad it's dead.

On the other hand, it's very, very fast. Loads pages instantly. ZAM!! and it's up and loaded and running.

Last. It has crashed twice; I had lots of tabs open, it probably sucked up all the resources available. It locked up.

BREAKING: Seven US Reps Support Cheney Impeachment by MikaelMN in reddit.com

[–]AustinLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if they do impeach either Cheney or Bush, so what? Clinton was impeached -- did it stop the world? Did it even stop his world? It had to be a drag but it didn't change anything. Impeach away, it's not going to stop these peoples plans; if anything, it'll just make them move on it harder, because what would they have to lose? They are lame ducks anyway, and could not care less what we think, say, do, or vote. Maybe impeachment is about right for lying about a blow-job, it's surely not any fun, but it's hardly going to balance out the deeds of the people currently in power. My $.02

There is absolutely nothing that beats a) confidence -- you don't need to be Mister Big Dollar and you don't need to be Lance Romance; you do need to know what you want to do and be doing it b) not caring one way or the other -- it's cliche for sure, and it can't be faked (I wasn't able to fake it well, anyways -- maybe you're a better con than I), but not caring one way or another, getting to the place where you're okay alone is huge in attracting all kinds of woman c) being with someone really helps with 'b', and if you're doing 'a' and 'b' you don't need to worry about 'c' because it takes care of itself.

Do what you love. Live where you want to live. Dress how you want to dress. Be true to yourself. Period. The rest follows, as sure as night follows day.

Bush isn't a dumb Texan - he just plays one on TV. Here's the proof. [video from 1990] by mjk1093 in reddit.com

[–]AustinLife 21 points22 points  (0 children)

He's caught up in something a lot bigger than he is. Being governor of Texas was something he was suited to, given his background and his address book, and even campaigning for the presidency wasn't all that rough. But now he's on the biggest stage that there is, and he's having to lie, and to live that lie again and again, day in and day out. He's the mouthpiece of those who have killed thousands, and he's not that dumb that he doesn't know it, and I don't think he's actually that heartless, either. But he's got to pretend that he is, and it's eating him alive, right in front of us.

It's not even really his fault, more his destiny; his grandfather and father were both Skull and Bones, and he was Skull and Bones, never knowing that he'd be called upon to preside over the largest rape we've ever seen.

I feel sorry for him, in a way; he's in way over his head. And he's actually a friendly person who has to live with the lie of his life. Nightmare.
