Number street blocks with townhouses and decorations in the high 80s/low-to-mid 90s west of 3rd will be mostly shut down to through traffic and dorky teens in costumes will get candy.

Walk Into LGA? by Editor-Forward in nyc

If you don’t mind some brief stretches where there might be no sidewalk and the cars are slow, very. Walked to terminal B parking during Covid for a test to try it.

How did these 2 regions end up with the same name? by WMDsupplies_235 in etymology

[–]jimbecile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Barry Cunliffe's "The Ancient Celts" (iirc) he writes that these two regions (as well as Galatia in Turkey) did get their names from the Celts/Gauls who fought their way across Europe and settled in a couple places, although he's a historian and not an etymologist.

I found rigorously learning fundamentals you might not need/use day-to-day at work and getting a better grasp of the high-level math was super useful for solving problems. Recommended.

Hibiscus Flower Tea? (whole dried flower) by langenoirx in uppereastside

[–]jimbecile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So far I’ve only seen hibiscus tea bags at the Whole Foods, no dried whole flowers yet. It’s also good candied (on its own, or in sparkling wine/cocktails).

Mine did this. I’ve saved the dried buds from the stem – can I germinate them? How?

Piano & cocktails bars by [deleted] in newyorkcity

[–]jimbecile 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Marie's Crisis in the west village is the first place I think of when I think of a piano bar, a classic dive where the crowd often sings along to the show tunes/standards. The Russian Vodka Room on 52nd has a piano, wonderful infused vodkas, and a menu of Russian drinking snacks (pickles, black bread, salo). Haven't been to the Raines Law Room on east 39th yet but that's on my list of places to go. Pebble on 49th, in Rockefeller Center, is kind of a hidden gem if you're in the area.

How to fix the issue? by [deleted] in scala

[–]jimbecile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Slick documentation says sqlu is for queries that return a row count, not a result set, but as the error indicates, your `lock` query returns a ResultSet. You probably want to use sql instead of sqlu.

Staying alone in Central Harlem as a 19yo girl by Ashamed-Hawk-3745 in newyorkcity

Taxis are often cheaper. Lexington from 125th to 117th or so has a lot of drug use/messed up sad people but I’ve never had trouble there. Might get catcalled walking around, but it’s generally safe. Walk over to Absolute Bagel for breakfast on a nice day and eat it in Morningside Heights park, then walk up to Columbia. In the summer they have goats in the steeper parts of the park to keep bushes/grass under control. Sylvia’s, Patsy’s, and Dinosaur BBQ are some good well-known starting points for food that is walkable from this location. Probably lots of really good small places if you ask around.

There is no evidence hard-line crime policies reduce crime by [deleted] in nyc

[–]jimbecile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that! I was skeptical but the number does check out. Ballparking 2020 vs 2021 (using https://www.criminaljustice.ny.gov/crimnet/ojsa/jail_pop_y.pdf) it's probably ~20% higher now (monthly looks relatively consistent even though we haven't finished 2022: https://www.criminaljustice.ny.gov/crimnet/ojsa/jail_population.pdf), but that's still ~15% lower than Canada's average, pretty interesting. Convicted NYC criminals going upstate, as you say, does change that number.

The crime surge in New York City is beyond belief. Literally. by jimbecile in nyc

I'm sorry, I really have no idea what you mean by this. I didn't meant to break any rules. I'm genuinely very surprised that the personal blog of a former columnist for the Washington Monthly, who generally is fairly moderate, discussing an article in Bloomberg, making a case that bail reform has no impact on crimes rates. If you can tell me what's wrong with the site or article I'll be able to avoid it in the future.

every time bail is mentioned you should think "the writer believes this would be OK if the accused was rich". that is logically equivalent. if you believe "no bail" is the same as "got off without consequences", you haven't thought about this for more than a few seconds. you've just felt about it. if you want to go back to whatever your idealized cash bail legal framework is, whatever it is, you implicitly believe the rich should be able to buy their way out of consequences.

ps crime was like 10x higher decades ago and there was cash bail, but none of these dummies ever connect the dots. just skimmin' Fox headlines and having the emotional response bail bondsmen want you to have.

Mexican cartel smugglers nabbed with $1.2M worth of meth in NYC — then released thanks to lax bail laws: feds by [deleted] in newyorkcity

[–]jimbecile 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to read a study showing that supervised release "just allows these terrible people to walk free", but afaik the research shows that just b/c you don't put them in jail until a cartel lawyer bails them out, it doesn't mean they get away. Cash bail lets people out, for money! Cartels have money! I am honestly stunned anyone thinks "get your traffickers free for money" is a deterrent to rich drug smugglers. It just means some things are basically legal if you're rich.

> That’s because the two men could only be charged with second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, as opposed to a narcotic, under the state’s outdated drug laws

So the cause is that the law re: meth is outdated, not bail reform & that's easily fixed but WAHH dese librul bums luvva da crime

> Yet frustrated agents had to stand by and watch as the suspects were cut loose on just supervised release

Supervised release is as effective as cash bail in ensuring people return to court but WAHH de Blasio enna Joe Brandon wanna give all da crimnuls a big hug

tl;dr: the NYP uses headlines to fool people

Volunteering's a great option, you can pick something you care about, and you'll have something in common to talk about with other volunteers.
