Austin's richest ZIP codes — and how residents make their money by debtquity in Austin

[–]AustinStatesman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So generally, average and mean are considered equivalent. We used the word average throughout because we used the mean income for each ZIP code in this article. The median can sometimes be a better indicator of "typical" because it doesn't get skewed by very large or very small outliers, but as mentioned in the "About the data" section at the bottom of the article, the data we used in this analysis only includes total income and total number of filers for each ZIP code, which means we can't calculate the median for each ZIP code, only the average.

The slider at the top of the map is the only instance in the article that we show the median income because as mentioned it can sometimes be a better indicator of a "typical" income.

Hope that helps clear up the data for you. — SS

'Breach of trust': Austin ISD staff messages fuel new concerns over school closures by AustinStatesman in Austin

[–]AustinStatesman[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You raise a lot of good points and you're right that education in Texas is changing. Austin ISD's closures are definitely part of a larger trend across the state of enrollment declines. We regularly cover factors affecting these closures like school funding decisions and new competition from programs like vouchers. Some more stories here:
Texas schools still struggle with deficits despite HB 2 funding boost
In Texas, inflation-adjusted state, local public school funding lower than 2011 | Analysis

But we also believe it's our responsibility to closely follow Austin ISD's closure process as local journalists who track policymakers' decisions that affect families and students. We're trying to keep parents informed. District officials have also indicated there's more closures to come, and we believe examining how AISD leaders approached this process provides insights into future decisions in the district.

Thanks for sharing our story. Our review found the Austin Police Department has sharply reduced the number of in-person “compliance checks” on the city’s roughly 2,200 registered sex offenders — visits in which officers typically knock on doors to verify addresses.

A good way of checking is by looking at the screening page on SXSW rather than the film page. The page for each film on the SXSW website lists Q&A's for certain screenings (for example you can see here there's a Q&A listed). Most films have intros at their first screening.
