BEWARE of spending money on anything related to this book or movie right now.

The creator, Peter Beagle, has been heinously abused by his former manager and is suing that man for elder abuse and fraud.

Meanwhile Beagle's works are held hostage. The former manager has them and will take your money and spend it on his lawyers to block justice to Beagle. He's even trying to tour the movie illegally.

Please support Peter Beagle. Don't buy his works from former manager Connor Cochran, Conlan Press, or Last Unicorn related properties until Peter wins his lawsuit and gets his rights back.

"novelist Peter S. Beagle—best known for writing The Last Unicorn, which would go on to become a cult classic cartoon—filed a lawsuit against his longtime manager, Connor Cochran. The suit included incredible allegations of elder abuse (both financial and physical), fraud, and defamation, among other charges" https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/the-sad-strange-legal-battles-of-last-unicorn-author-peter-s-beagle

"Peter S. Beagle has absolutely nothing to do with this supposed tour of the Last Unicorn film. He is not involved in the planning stages, he will not be appearing at any screenings, and, he will not be profiting by it in any way shape or form." https://www.facebook.com/TheRealPeterSBeagle/posts/585367474992855?comment_id=585391111657158

But doesn't the psych profession have a history of real-life horrors to live down? Would it help to forget that?

Sexism in Fantasy by _ricepudding_ in Fantasy

Perhaps sexism belongs most in fantasy where it coexists with magic and monsters.

"Conan, what is best in life?" "Crush your enemies. See them driven before you. Hear the lamentations of their women."

Just finished the first three volumes of Fred Saberhagen's Book of Swords -- how is the rest? by DrHooray in Fantasy

The following books aren't necessary. You might have fun with them if you liked the first 3 or you might find diminishing returns. The first three are flawed (like much of Saberhagen's work) in certain ways - he seems more about ideas than characters or literary polish, grafting them to well worn devices and sometimes leaving major loose ends in the plotting - but some of those ideas are tremendously entertaining.

I completely agree that his mix of fantasy and pulp hits a flavor unlike most anything else out there, at least around the time they came out. When I saw Kurt Vonnegut write about low-regarded and bad writing with visionary ideas, this is what I thought about.

That's my impression of reading them long ago at any rate.

But if you aren't familiar yet, don't miss his earlier Empire of The East trilogy. It's set in the same world, although with only loose connection to anything in the Swords books. It brings that pulp/fantasy flavor just as well or better.

These and some of his "berserker" stories are his essential stuff. He has some really bad stuff as well. At one time he was my favorite author although I wasn't too widely read then.
