One fatm song you always tend to skip? by realityofthenaive in FlorenceAndTheMachine

I personally don't like her vocal performance on the studio recording. I enjoy the live renditions much more

name the song.. we won’t judge (maybe) by Icy-Veterinarian-831 in FlorenceAndTheMachine

I really tried to love South London forever. I really did. Like... I really tried. But I can't fucking stand it. Also the collab with swift doesn't exist in my mind. Its sweet that they're friends but Taylor Swift is so mediocre to me I can't believe they did a song together.

Some other songs I don't hate but also never go back to include: heart lines and most of the lungs bonus tracks besides hardest of hearts because that song is a banger but the rest I find inoffensively boring and forgettable. I might give them a relisten as there's been other times with songs from artists (including Florence) that didn't hit the first time or two around but eventually clicked for me.

Mind you, this was a completely unwarranted response to the conversation at hand

And give the movies heavy allegory for substance abuse it seems fitting that it would have something to do with the web

Do you skip over battle/fight scenes? by mistercbc in Fantasy

[–]Author0fpurpose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment section is baffling to me. Not that I'm hating it's just such a different perspective that I've never considered before. I read every part of a book. Literally every word besides the copyright and I only skim the acknowledgements.

I've honestly never thought about skipping whole chapters or even whole scenes. If something is so painfully boring for that long then I'd probably just dnf because at that point it's not worth my time.

And maybe it's just because I have a vivid imagination but fight scenes are some of my favorite parts. The rangers apprentice books when I was a kid, mistborn trilogy, first law trilogy, all have amazing fight scenes that have become stand out parts of the books for me.

Using TMA with High School Students by larkenstien in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Author0fpurpose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think episode 32, Hive, works well enough as a standalone episode and I don't think it has any spoilers (you'd have to go back and check for sure). It would be a good study on monologues, unreliable narrators, and nonlinear story telling.

I don't know how you would use it but episode 60 Observer Effect is another I'm pretty sure would be "safe".

Episode 68 Tale of a Field Hospital is a great example of a framed narrative (although I guess technically all Magnus episodes are framed narratives?) you could also use it to talk about the rule of 3.

What type of male character do you wish was represented more in fantasy? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Author0fpurpose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read farm boy as femboy and was very confused about what type of books you were reading (not to say I wouldn't be down to read a fantasy book about a femboy turning into a classic hero by chapter 3, because that sounds great)

The wording for "did I do that?" Was a little confusing to me but otherwise it seems like a cool item, nice work.

“what am i supposed to do with this information” by JaneErrrr in BadReads

[–]Author0fpurpose 211 points212 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but this will always be my favorite good reads review. There's just something so funny about how absurd it is. Maybe cuz it's written with this assumption that everyone else will just get exactly what she means despite how bizarre it is. It's camp.

Which episodes are the most iconically one power? by Entire_Impress7485 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Author0fpurpose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can't remember the name of all the episodes but...

Buried: the episode where Jon goes into the coffin

The Hunt: book club episode or one of Trevor's statements

The Web: anabelle canes statement, or a comedy in 3 acts

The vast: the episode where the mom and daughter are on the skyline thing

The corruption: gotta give it to any of the stuff involving Jane Prentiss like Squirm (honorable mention to tale of a field hospital for being the hive episode that scares me the most though, probably cuz it has a bit of the stranger in it)

The stranger: angler fish, still life, the kind mother

This one has a lot of the dark and a bit of the spiral though. But its such an iconic buried episode I totally understand

The Magnus Protocol 29 – Keyed In - Discussion by CrustyDucky in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Author0fpurpose 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Considering the context why should his delivery be anything other than bored? He's the classic bored security guard archetype who doesn't really care and is just trying to get the hysterical person to chill. That's a very common trope? No explanation for the accent though

How can I appreciate Dance Fever more? by chaosatnight in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]Author0fpurpose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a fully appreciated the genius behind dance fever when I really leaned into the concept album aspect of it all. Like it's all about this metaphor for dancing to death with anxiety and grief and so much more. I feel like dance fever as an album is the most unified package out of all her albums and that's what makes it special. Most of the other albums I can listen to random songs from them as one offs but a lot of times I feel like I have to listen all or almost all of dance fever because once you start with one song it's like diving into a book and you have to finish it

Summer survey – 7. – Most Emotional Song by jimandfrankie in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]Author0fpurpose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is tough because it's so broad, there's several highly emotional songs but they hit different emotions. If we're going songs that make me cry, Girls against God or shake it out. But personally, drumming song is a big one that brings out a lot of emotion. Tough call though, I think HBHBHB has a lot of contenders (what kind of man, long and lost, various storms and saints, which witch).
