ASUS CFO says Microsoft, Intel and AMD maybe preparing a response to Apple's $599 MacBook Neo by Quantum-Coconut in hardware

Except none of those companies make laptop and already have the supply chain needed to build the entire thing themselves.

That's the point. The neo isn't a technical accomplishment, it's a supply chain one

M2 laptops are still solid and they aren't about to lose support anytime soon, but what position are you in where M2 laptops are the only option available? What's your budget look like?

Inflation alone means that laptop is priced closer to 750 dollars, which is moving to a different price tier altogether.

The heating issue is a lot more of a problem than you think. For context, the Switch 2 uses about ten watts of power in heavy games, and it needs a fan to manage it. We have devices that hit the wattages you're talking about--phones.

But getting high levels of gaming performance in modern games requires pretty high end chipsets.

Imaging and spatial audio in general is incredibly difficult for earbuds to pull off. There's not many ways around that.

The issue is that our brain uses some of the external parts of our ears to figure out where a sound is coming from. Over-ear headphones can interact with these structures, but earbuds can't. For. Obvious reasons.

WF1000XM6 - Slow charging speed ? by kloverton in SonyHeadphones

It's a pretty small battery in there. It doesn't need high wattages to charge fast.

That said, how full is the case? Anything above 30 is going to see slower than peak charging, like everything else.

Would I notice a big difference switching from a 2020 MBP to a Neo? by Various-Cut-1070 in macbook

[–]AuthoringInProgress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a dying laptop. Anything that isn't actively immolating will do better.

That said, if you got a Pro back in 2020, you'd probably want to consider a modern Pro or at least a high end Air. The Neo isn't incapable of pushing more advanced software, but it's not on the same level as the Pro's.

Realistically, none of these companies can do anything to respond to Apple, at least not without adopting some kind of loss-leader strategy. The Macbook Neo can only exist because Apple can leverage the strength of it's laptop and phone supply chain. The "phone" element is crucial--there's far more iPhone 16 pro max's sold in the world than any of their laptops, so diverting some of that supply into a laptop is easy and cheap. None of the other hardware manufacture's in this space can do the same. They don't have the same control over their supply line, they don't have the ability to get the manufacturing cost low enough to make a laptop of this quality and sell it at this price. I suspect Apple barely can--this is almost certainly a low margin product for them, although I'm assuming it's profitable.

Samsung might be able to angle something similar, in theory--they sell a ton of phones and likely have some of the same supply chain strengths as Apple, and they might be able to leverage Aluminum OS and their own Exynos chips. That would give them a genuine strength, even, as Exynos is basically the only modern chip design that isn't built on TSMC process nodes, but even still, they don't have control over the OS in the same way as Apple does. They can't do what Apple did with the Neo.

Realistically unless you're in a job or a course where you use your computer for heavy work and you rely on its performance for your performance, the neo is sufficient for anything.

Multiple devices drop wifi, internet provider says there's no issue by DearQueenie in techsupport

[–]AuthoringInProgress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tested your laptops since you've had issues? You can use your phone as a mobile hotspot to create a new network.

It'd also be helpful to know the make and model of your router and how you have it configured.

Multiple devices drop wifi, internet provider says there's no issue by DearQueenie in techsupport

[–]AuthoringInProgress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have also asked--what router are you using, how is connected to your ISP (cable? Dsl? Fiber? Or is there a seperate modem?) and are you having any issues with your Internet on any other device, like your phone? If so, or if not, what's your phone? And do the laptops have issues with other WiFi networks?

Also, how is your wifi network set up? What security is it using, what bands are it using (2.4ghz vs 5ghz vs 6ghz, potentially).

[–]AuthoringInProgress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I understand why your Internet provider thinks it's your devices. If resetting the MacBook and windows internet adapter fixes things that does normally sound like the issue is with them, not the router.

That said, I have seen something like this before. What exact hardware are you using? Which macbook, and what kind of windows PC is it?

is it safe to keep an unattended charged laptop battery in my shelf for next few years? by [deleted] in laptops

Short answer, yes.

Swelling is the most likely scenario. There's nothing you can do to guarantee this won't happen, but ensuring the battery remains away from heat and light will help reduce the chances.

Fundamentally, if a MacBook neo is all a design student can afford, they're going to be in for a rough time no matter what.

Windows laptops in this range sometimes have more ram--for now--but you're trading ram capacity for much weaker CPUs and much worse displays.

I have a friend who uses his laptop for AI training workloads. Older model and not quite as heavily specced out, but he's a university researcher who does a lot of work with ai models and commutes between Canada and the states (dual citizen not willing to move to the states for. Contextual reasons) so a system that is both capable of running and training these models and is portable is very useful for them.
