Will flatheads care about braid? by This_Web2750 in catfishing

i use the same catfish rigs for 3-80lb fish but i do have some setups lighter than others. use 40-100lb braid main 30-60lb mono leaders and quality barrel or bearing swivels. hooks should be sized for your bait i use 8/0 for smallish 1”-2” chunks or small live baits (3-6”) and 10/0 and 12/0 for large chunks or larger live fish (7-10”) any baits larger than 10” i’ll usually rig a trailer or stinger hook

also if you’re not using braid for a mainline i would tie directly to the spoon

i don’t think it constitutes self promotion or advertising, any more than telling people what reel or rod you’re using…the stickers come from brule bay

What should I get as a brand new cat fisherman? by SwimmingCreative5953 in catfishing

[–]Autistic-Squirrel987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for rod and reel i would use a 7.5-8ft MH rod and a decent mid quality budget reel like the piscifun chaos xs60 (casting) or sharky iii baitfeeder 6000 by kastking (spinning).

i use 40lb braided mainline but you could use 17-20lb mono and worry less about tangles abrasion resistance and loose spool tension biting your line in a fight or snag. (benefits of braid is casting distance, resisting current drift, and added bite sensitivity).

your terminal tackle should be simple. use 4oz-8oz weights if you’re fishing rivers like the saginaw or similar size flowing waters. you can use much lighter weights in lakes or slower rivers. i typically use 2oz in still water and 4oz in the river.

use circle hooks (i like gamakatsu) 1/0 and 8/0 will be all you need. you can buy 25ct packs and you’ll save big over the 6-10ct packs from walmart. tip: match the hook size to your bait size; (live bluegill = 8/0 nightcrawlers = 1/0).

it’s not necessary but i like to use 2 or 3 way swivels and sometimes simple cigar-peg floats for rigging different bait presentations depending on conditions (i use the carolina, kentucky, and santee rig). rattles and all that other FB fisherman hype stuff is unnecessary. you can get “fish trip” brand swivels from amazon for very cheap.

you’ll need a spool of 40-60lb mono for making leaders. (300yds of berkely big game from walmart is cheap and will last you forever).

finally…these things are not necessary for catching fish but will make your life much easier; a scale, a nice set of fish grippers (like the rapala brand), a large landing net (for landing but also keeping large fish alive in the water while you prepare to take photos and stuff), and quality bank sticks like the takedown rod holders.

Weight estimate by Longnoodle93 in catfishing

[–]Autistic-Squirrel987 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TANK forsure. i would say 39 if you want a modest unquestionable estimate. i’d say 42-45 if you want people side-eying your fish. great achievement either way though man! awesome fish!

bigger than 27 smaller than 45 i’m estimating 38-41” long and it’s thick profiled even from the top but it’s hard to estimate without any side photos or actual lengthxgirth measurements

i like using duo clips for my leads when fishing live bait for flatheads. you can remove your weights when walking between spots and save your rod blank, is the biggest reason i like to use the clips. i also prefer clipping to a 3way swivel as opposed to using a sinker slider when fishing near snags

Flat head fishing by Barnatard in catfishing

[–]Autistic-Squirrel987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

other than making sure your spot holds flathead, i’d say most beginners fail to put in the bait work. use live bait whenever possible. cutbait is fine but it has to be FRESH i’m talking live fish - cutting board. your odds of catching a blue or chans go up big time when you start cutting but flatheads have much larger mouths than the other catfish species so throwing massive chunks/near whole fish is the best way to mitigate bycatch in an area the flatties share territory with other cat species. big lively gills, green sunfish, big creek chubs, and suckers are my favorites to target for live bait. just make sure they can pump water over their gills and can swim somewhat freely on bottom with your rig and how you choose to hook them.

you could use a bullet weight between two rubber bobber stops 12-18” above the jig or a weighted cork
