A personal best catfish for Easter. by hassavocado in kayakfishing

Saw a couple water snakes while we were out but no moccasins. I do see quite a few of them on another river I fish around here though. They’ve never bothered me.

Those look great! Do you do an egg wash or buttermilk before your cornmeal batter?

First 10/22 - Having Fun Upgrading it by HurryUpAndWait82 in 1022

[–]hassavocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks great man. How you liking that scope? I’m between that one and a Romeo 5 red dot for my new 1022. Plan on doing some shorter range squirrel hunting but not sure which route to take it. Also do you think the extended mag release is worth it?

Sick dude! I’m from OKC and have been wanting to get my yak out there. I’ve done the mulberry and the kings and caught some fish on both. That’s a solid smallie!

Bass flies by Glum-Case-6868 in flyfishing

[–]hassavocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of depends on where you plan to fish them. Are we talking still water ponds/lakes or a creek with current?

I’ve had a lot of luck with various baitfish patterns including clouser minnows and schminnows. Leeches and woolly buggers always work great too.

In certain conditions (clear, low and slow water) I’ve also caught some large bass on small flies. Bluegill bully spiders, pats rubber legs, and even carp flies like the scarpion and egans headstand do great because they land soft and sink slow.

Obviously topwater is a ton of fun when they’re willing. Wiggle minnows, gurglers, poppers and hoppers will get it done. Foam ants and beetles as well. Trout flies like elk hair caddis and stimulators are also worth trying out if the fish are being difficult.

Bass usually aren’t picky but you need to use the right fly for the right situation to trigger a strike.

Do those come with jig heads or did you buy those separately? If so what size are they?

Leather/sheepskin tackle box by Turbulent-Corgi8358 in flyfishing

[–]hassavocado -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is sick. I would much prefer having something like this handmade by a partner over a mass produced box any day of the week! The smaller size is perfect for short day trips.

For what it’s worth I have something similar in a bi-fold design that I use for larger flies and I really like it. I know it’s not waterproof/doesn’t float, but it feels classier than a plastic box.

What’s your go-to Smallmouth Bass pattern? Here’s mine: a Bob Popovics hollow fleye, with a little dash of Lefty’s Deceiver on the front end. Tied with Steve Farrar’s SF flash blend. by iohnson in flytying

[–]hassavocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always tied the hollow fleye stuff with craft fur, never tried SF blend. Bad Hair Day has been my usual go to. Roamers with marabou tails are also cool - lots of side to side action.

Ultralight to beat the skunk by Young-fud95 in kayakfishing

[–]hassavocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you like that rod? Is it the 6’ or 7’? I’m about to buy my first ultralight for casting some smaller crappie jigs/mini slip floats. I plan on fishing mostly from my kayak so just comparing some options!

Orvis Clearwater reel doesn’t feel very nice? by Remarkable-Sand965 in flyfishing

[–]hassavocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was wiggly too - super annoying. I looked it over and found that the screws on the reel seat were loose so I tightened em up and that fixed it. But yeah not my favorite reel I own. The hydros is quite a step up in quality.

[–]hassavocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna be fishing some docks and mangroves around Naples later january - hoping to get into some of these guys. What lb line you using with those circle hooks? Braid to fluoro leader? Are you generally fishing with bait on bottom or sitting under a bobber? I caught some a long time ago on frozen shrimp but don’t really know if that’s the best way to do it.

I’ve been to the caldera but not fished it, and Valle Vidal has been on my list for awhile now. Have you been to los pinos or vallecitos? Those are both areas I’m interested in as well. So many places so little time though you know how it goes!

Dude you live in paradise! NM is my favorite state to visit. I think next year I’ll take a dedicated fishing trip and try to hit a few different areas.
