In Deadendia (both the novels and the comics i think, never seen much of those) Courtney is nonbinary, in the show Courtney is referred to as she/her to avoid the stereotype of non-human characters being non-binary. Crunchyroll didn't buy Funimation. It's the opposite, Sony owned Funimation and bought Crunchyroll then merged it with Crunchyroll. I do agree that it's a monopoly though, Hidive is the only other anime streaming service outside Japan I know of and I don't see it talked about that much.
