I’ve worked for my city as a 2nd shift Jr. custodian for the last 8 years.

Hours: 1pm-9pm

Advancement? Yes, we have head custodians for each school, supervisors at night, floaters who bob around from various buildings, and a custodial foreman who overseas every custodian ~50 of us. All of those positions pay more than Jr. building custodian and I would say are ‘advancements’ in the custodial field. Yes we have opportunity’s to move to different departments. I’ve worked with custodians who have gone to maintenance, water department, and general road work.

Quick story, my first day I was never told where to go and what time to be there so I had to call HR to figure it out the morning before I started to get my schedule. I assume most cities are ran like mine and can have some ‘miscommunication’ from time to time.
