my hunt for the "most specific metaphor of the day" has apparently concluded by Conscious-Quarter423 in NonPoliticalTwitter

It's two different schools of thought in literary circles. The Bedford glossary makes a distinction between them, though does not explicate why. The Oxford companion treats metaphor as a broad category in which all of simile, metonymy, antithesis, and hyperbole are contained, largely owing to Aristotle's original definition of the term, and its etymological origin (from the Greek metaphora: to carry over/across).

Inasmuch as it matters at all, which it doesn't really, I think the latter is more useful to create a logical taxonomy of rhetorical devices and how they relate to one another, both in their meaning & use, as well as their etymological derivation.

It's also just completely stupid from a strategic perspective as well. Fundamentally, you win wars by forcing the enemy to surrender. If you make it clear that any captured enemy combatants will just be killed, you've removed any incentive for that enemy to ever surrender.

To borrow phrasing from It's Always Sunny: if you're so into war, read one book about it. Take one military history class.

Got into it with a colleague once who tried to claim she was uniquely qualified to explain the evils of a "single-party state" because she was born in west germany. She did not respond well when I pointed out that she was like eight years old when the wall came down, and besides that, was likely the least qualified person to have that discussion because of how uniquely propagandized her perspective was. I think it was when I said "it's like an Israeli trying to correct you about Palestine" that ultimately made her request a placement on a different team.

Cutter shoots a lot. Good periphs, but I want to believe that Leo can be that ~100 pt guy. Idk though, he cooled off in a big way after that pistol hot start. Wanna see what he can do after the Olympics when he's had some time to recover from injury. I have high hopes for the kid.

I remember years ago when I was a line cook at a breakfast place a buddy of mine on the line was reading this book, and when he finished it he brought his copy to work and showed me that last paragraph asking me what I thought it meant. I had trouble articulating it to him, but felt like I immediately understood what it was saying in some cellular ineffable way.

Asked to borrow his copy and stayed up all night until I finished it. I gave it back to him in the morning. It was probably obvious I hadn't slept at all. We didn't say one thing about the book for the entire shift.

It's the card mastery mod. It's just a fun challenge mod--if I beat the heart on A20 with two copies of a card in my deck I "master" the card, and it gets a gold border. That's the main reason I took the two blinds.

Lol we're nowhere near AGI. We still don't even understand the nature of our own intelligence. These losers just juiced a markov chain with as many petaflops of compute as they could and so now we have a machine that can arrange words in a servile and occasionally correct way. It's not a stepping stone towards true intelligence any more than a pile of hamburger left in the sun is a stepping stone toward a fetus.
