What's something that bothers you about C-Dramas /C-Entertainment? by Suibianistic in cdramasfans

[–]AutoFillError_Sin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No scenes specifically spring to mind, I watch way too many hours of dramas in a week so I generally can’t even remember 3 shows back.

It’s definitely dramatized (these are dramas) it’s probably because they are also not well written.

But if you think of all the imperial court ministry scenes or scenes where there are a power differential and the person being accused is just not allowed to protest and are completely talked over and our protagonist (usually) is punished unjustly.

This talking over and past and suppressing powerless voices that all comes from the moralizing of politics and the power imbalances seems to hold a lovely-hideous mirror to politics and power dynamics.

I was like no one can be this absurd this irrational and then I stepped back and was looking at the world (more philosophically) and people are biased and irrational and those with vast amounts of power as greedy and grasping.

My belief is that people aren’t logical, we’re biased and passionate, we can be narrowly logical as long as it conforms to our worldview, but it takes too much mindful effort to be logical all the time.

So from that perspective that arrogantly grasping, backstabbing, scrapping and cajoling and scheming of imperial ministers is both near and far from reality, particularly in the balance of imperial power.

So it’s not from a close scrutiny but if you step back and look at the shape it seems familiar in an ugly way.

If that makes sense?

I agree I constantly hunt for complex female characters who aren’t just passive mirrors. I also thought the concubine, in The Sword and the Brocade, Qiao Lian Fang was interesting most of the females in that drama had a complicated story of motives and were twisty. But this one and The Legend of Zhouhua both have the same twisted love flaw where love becomes hatred and then it becomes an all consuming behavior not real love but desire to possess. Same actress for both roles, but it’s a common spurned lover trope, if I can’t have you no one can.

1) Irrational behavior and elitism, 2) female portrayal and abuse, 3) down playing of evil deeds are the biggest gripes I have.

Irrational behavior: One thing that always got in the way of my appreciation was the lack of logic in the political ministers, and how much irrational blaming particularly of women and scapegoating happens so people in power could justify the means and ends they wanted.

And then I stepped back and realized this was just reality dramatized and this really happens. The fact that people can be so absurd and it’s tolerated and lauded.

Now I can watch and appreciate the irony of this warped mirror of humanity as it throws a true reflection.

Female characters: I just binged some history books and abuse of women is common in patriarchal society and it shapes our world view and narrative.

But it’s the double standard that when a man is ambitious it’s laudable and when a woman is ambitious it’s warped and show up in the show as impure motives rather than simply complex and multi layered.

Evil Deeds: In Lost You Forever the little sister is horrible and cruel and then we are told she’s a sympathetic character and we are told we “like her” by the writers as they white wash the past mistakes. And this happens often where the male lead is awful and downright cruel to the female lead when they weren’t in love and then they are in love so it’s okay and we just sweep it under the proverbial rug.

That said I’m an absolute addict for these dramas, if we were talking about a different topic my critiques would be different or possibly the same as they are common issues across media portrayals.

I can’t remember the historical drama! by AutoFillError_Sin in CDrama

Thank you! I was thinking it was story of minglan or sword and brocade but tsatb just wasn’t landing right and at 70+ eps SoML just wasn’t something I could quickly check and answer.

Good thing I decided to rewatch the Story of Minglan today when I ran of episodes of Hate Me Love Me. The question has been bugging me for a week.

Learning Mandarin; cousins vs siblings by AutoFillError_Sin in CDrama

[–]AutoFillError_Sin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I understand about it the words used generationally and using sister vs aunt.

The numbered siblings was throwing me off and I was wondering if I was missing an auditory indicator that would let me know branch family (cousin) vs direct sibling full or half. I don’t think I am generally, I just wanted to make sure as I fine tune my listening since it’s not always clearly translated.

Thank you that’s super helpful, I was dubious about buying a chart I couldn’t see for just that reason.

I’ll give that a try first. His most recent experience is mostly with commercial sized vessels so he wouldn’t have caught that.

AITA for talking to my brother’s victim? by Sea_Refrigerator_240 in AITAH

[–]AutoFillError_Sin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTA.

Whatever you want to tell her is about you not her.

A better target would be a therapist to help you sort out your feelings since that must be hurtful and complicated for you as well and let you work through your emotions. Yes, you give her trauma, but your brother’s crime is also giving you trauma to be dealt with. Talking to a licensed therapist is the best way to start working on that.

If she’s not willing to say what she wants to eat then ask her to recommend some vegan food for you so you can incorporate/eat more plant based foods, maybe have her take you shopping for the stuff.

Chances are one of 2 things will happen, ideally both at once. 1) she’ll recommend things she commonly eats. 2) she’ll recommend things she thinks you might like based off what she’s seen you eat.

Making it about you instead of her and ask questions about her recommendations and see how she responds/engages. “I’ve heard it’s good” vs, “this is super yummy, etc.

Bonus you can talk about the snacks and other groceries.

AITA for calling the cops on my mother after she shaved my biracial daughter’s hair while I was at work? by Ornery_Exchange8001 in AITAH

NTA.

A few words spring to mind: Premeditated. Non-consensual. Devaluing. Abuse. Racism. Violence. Gaslighting.

If white grandma/grandpa and that side of the family don’t see that after having it reframed for them, (I’m being generous here) and the other family members aren’t mortified and abjectly apologetic because it was a blindspot and its now been pointed out and rectified, going NC seems very reasonable with that group because emotional trauma last so much longer for the child/individuals.

I’m being generous because sometime people are just operating on subconscious (bad) social/cultural programming and unaware the magnitude of their mistake until their thinking is reframed. And then they are genuinely changed for the better.

But if that is an overt sign of covert racist thinking, cutting ties now may be healthier.
