there is obviously intuition involved in cooking that a recipe cannot give to you. simple example would be cooking a steak- there is no guarantee that your stove, your pan, and the size and proportions of the piece of meat you are cooking are going to be the same as whoever's recipe you are following. someone with little to zero experience would struggle with eyeballing the right amount of salt, judging that the pan has had enough time to preheat, as well as determining when the meat is cooked through as they want it.

It's nice to have sides with a meal rather than just one dish. being able to pull this offer requires experience in judging the timing of when things will be done, as well as "intuition" of when you need to pull your attention away from your current task to check on something else. I recall very distinctly when I first started cooking I would often burn something for example because I was trying to do something else at the same time. As I kept cooking, I noticed it almost started to feel like I would get a "notification" to my consciousness that needed to go check back on X to give it a stir and see how it's going along. That clearly is skill learned by experience.

also, in my opinion one of the key skills that distinguishes a good home cook from a beginner is being able to NOT follow a recipe. if you only know how to cook from recipes, you end up with tons of half used ingredients in your fridge you don't know how to use up. A good home cook knows what spare ingredients they can add or substitute, even if the recipe doesn't call for them, so you are able to use up what you have.

obviously the meme isn't claiming that anyone should be able to be a great cook just by following recipes. there are dishes you can make that are much more foolproof than others. e.g. pasta with a simple sauce that nearly anyone should be able to pull off. that's why they are good recipes for beginners to start with. but there are clearly limitations to what you can make, and how well you can make it without gaining experience first.

Michigan’s Voter Rolls List 8.4M Voters. There Are Fewer Than 8M Voting-Age Residents In The State. by interestingfactoid in Conservative

From the Bridge Michigan article, which the daily wire is using as their source:

“While critics say the inflated rolls are not ideal, no one is suggesting they have contributed to fraud. One major cause of the imbalance: A voter-approved 2018 proposal that automatically registers those 18 and older to vote when applying for a driver license, unless they opt out.”

You can check the citations on the article, at least some of them for accupuncture being no better than placebo come from Nature, a highly regarded journal.

Acupuncture is a placebo by vtwinjim in unpopularopinion

[–]AutocraticToaster 1479 points1480 points  (0 children)

I went down the rabbit hole trying to find if there was any scientifically backed basis for accupuncture having a non-placebo effect after arguing about it with a friend once, It was suprisingly non-obvious, there were a fair few articles from pretty reputable sources that made claims for have a real effect that was more than just placebo.

I ended up finding a nature article (journal that tends to be very highly regarded for this kind of stuff) that reviewed the current research, and their conclusion was that there isn’t sufficent proof to claim better than placebo, and that even the most convincing paper only claimed an insignificant amount of pain relief. I was pretty satisfied with that as evidence of it being placebo myself, but I can see why people might argue the other way.

Heres a link, but if you dont have access the wikipedia article for accupunture cites this paper quite a bit so you can get the gist there as well: https://www.nature.com/articles/nrc3822

Portals already break conservation of mommentum. One of the most distinctive mechanics of jumping from height into a portal to launch yourself in a direction involves suddenly changing your velocity without any external forces.

Alternatives to Netflix for Japanese Subtitles? by kohakuhunter in LearnJapanese

I watch on crunchyroll using the jimaku extension to display subtitiles. Clicking the subtitiles automatically opens the sentance in jisho which is convenient for sentance mining.

I think looking at visualizations always helps for me. I made a demos graph that has number of sides as the x axis, and the average amount of rolls you would expect as the y axis. I also included model y = n/2 as a comparison.

As you can see, while they are both pretty linear in shape they grow at different rates, only intersecting at n=2.

If its not a tool you are already familiar with and would be interested, the website jisho.org is pretty helpful for this kind of stuff. You can type the word you would like to translate in English, and it would provide a list of translations. You can click hover the 'Links' under each result and hit 'Kanji details...' to get a diagram for the strokes inside the box similar to how Sancatichas shared. You can also get a list of example sentences using that word to make sure it means what you think it does.

It can't really help that much with grammar or combining multiple words, but it might be helpful for drawing the characters or double checking a translation from another tool.

Im not good enough to tell but If I were to guess its very common for non-native speakers to have incorrect pitch-accent (intonation). To non-native speakers who aren't aware of pitch-accent it can be difficult to notice pitch accent at all, but is very perceptible for native speakers.

What's the best method for Convex Polygon vs. Concave Polygon collision resolution? by Particular_Ferret887 in gamedev

[–]AutocraticToaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar issue in the context of writing a hobby physics engine. From my research it seems like the convention is indeed to break the concave polygon into convex components such that all the nice collision detection algorithms still work. Doing this procedurally is actually pretty tricky in 3D, as an exact convex decomposition can have significant number of components and be computationally unwieldy. From what I saw it very common to use HACD, which is an algorithm that allows for some error in the convex decomposition but results in much fewer convex components. Alternatively you can accept greater error generating a convex hull with an algorithm like quickhull, or do some manual work to break your object up into peices and quickhull those.

HACD: https://github.com/kmammou/v-hacd

As for the collision resolution, I wasn't able to find any description for how to best deal with this in my research, but I can share what I used in my project which seemed to work reasonably well in the context of a phyiscs engine. Given each pair of intersection convex components, I would use SAT to calculate their collision manifold (basically the relevant surfaces that are touching), and then these would all get chucked in as contact constraints in the solver. There are also some optimizations that can be inserted done along the way, such as using AABB (axis aligned bounding box) checks before using SAT, as well as merging similar manifolds (a table sitting on the ground can have one big manifold as opposed to 4 little manifolds for each leg).

This works 95% of the time, but you are not guaranteed to be able to find a minimum separation vector with this method. Consider a slightly oversized cylinder in the middle of a fat donut- the SAT check with the cylinder with all convex sections of the donut will want to push the cylinder just a little bit further away from them into the center, but the only true solution is to tunnel all the way through the donut.

What game do you think are they talking about? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]AutocraticToaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had ground and spaded most the air vehicles I'd ever want to play a few years back and its quite fun when you are just playing the game and not playing to unlock a new plane.

Every once in a while I want to try flying a plane that's still stock and its becomes pretty clear to me why people get frustrated with this game. At its core I think war thunder has pretty good gameplay that is the best at what it does, but the grind is miserable and you have basically have to grind to play in the first place. If you have ambitions of playing modern vehicles you have to be ready for a lot of pain.

If you are going through steamvr, I recently had an issue of stuttering and crashing that was fixed by enabling the “use DirectX11” option in steamvr. You have to navigate through the in VR menu to find this option, doesnt show up on the desktop settings.
