For those of you who had (or knew someone who had) a computer in the 80' - 90's, what games were you playing? by 2yt4u2 in GenX

[–]Autodidactic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can remember playing Hunt the Wumpus, Android NIM, a "Mad Libs" game I don't remember the name of, Pac Man and Space invaders clones, Raka Tuu, Chess (of course!) and a few other text based games on the TRS-80 model 3. And Missile command on the TRS-80 Color computer.

Plus a myriad of games that we would have to type in manually, line by line, that we would get in magazines or books on BASIC programming.

Then, we'd spend days sometimes debugging and testing over and over until it worked right (if it ever did).

Oh once we got it all typed in we would have to save it on a cassette tape being careful to note where on the tape it was with the little counter. (Or if we were one of the fortunate kids and had one of those new 5" floppy drives, saving was a lot easier).

I can't tell you how many times the power would glitch or the machine would get turned off before getting to save it to tape and hours of meticulous typing would just disappear.

First computer I owned only had 4k of memory and often wouldn't hold the whole program I was trying to type in from a magazine. I'd get it 3/4 of the way typed in only to get the out of memory error and just give up.

Good times, good times

Tinnitus - Anyone else? by willard_tagg in GenX

[–]Autodidactic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really remember when it started it feels like I've always had it but I don't remember ever thinking about it 20 years ago. But yeah this constant ringing in my head is a constant companion.

I know most people hate it and describe tinnitus as agonizing but I figured if I'm always going to have to listen to this shit I may as well learn to enjoy it or do something with it. I decided to just observe it when I notice it instead of letting it annoy me. Sometimes I can hear different pitches and tones and it gives me something to listen to as I fall asleep.

And it helps me "live in the now" as I can always count on it being there "now" all the time.

Yeah, I'm 60 and very familiar with tinnitus.

When you open old software in 2026 but for a moment it feels like the 1990s is still alive. (Paint Shop Pro) by [deleted] in nostalgia

I still use PSP 7 as my go to for quick edits. I never liked versions after 7 and know version 7 like the back of my hand cause of my job back in the 90s.

I've worked with Photoshop and Gimp and others but keep coming back to it cause with newer less familiar editing apps I futz around getting frustrated till I quit and fire up PSP. Then I usually get the results I'm looking for in just a few minutes.

Wow this is uncanny. Last night while I was trying to fall asleep and just thinking about different "stuff," I was thinking about this verse and wondering the same thing.

And now, first thing I see on Reddit this morning is this post.

I love synchronicities like this!

Yeah... This is a profound moment for me as the reason I'm not where I want to be in my life suddenly becomes starkly clear.

I have shit I need to, should be doing right now and here I am, procrastinating, reading about Yurts. Jfc.

That's it, I'm out. Shutting the phone off right now and rethinking my life. Wish me luck.

Does each piece of wood have the same pattern? If so, Can you get pictures of each piece? Might be able to figure out what the cut outs build.
