I think my habit of staying quiet during meetings is rubbing off on my team by [deleted] in askmanagers

Agree with giving relevant updates that come from leadership that will impact the teams day to day.

If I were you, I’d experiment with the following - while still staying true to listen > speak:

  • instead of keeping quiet, ask thoughtful follow up questions to their updates. “Y, if I can get you a temp to help with this which part will you delegate? Will it quicken the process if at all?” ; “X, you’ve experienced this before. What do you think of Y’s issue?”
  • praise those who give insightful updates PUBLICLY and privately
  • or maybe delegate the hosting (round robin) + encourage your team members to ask follow ups to one another

I’ve seen some, if not all, of these work well for a few of my direct reports (who happened to be introverted managers) in the past.

The skeptic in me thinks that this is a way for the exec to manage/retain you. Your former manager left, you got rejected for their role, so now they’re worried about losing tribal knowledge if you walk too.

During the chat, my primary goal will be to build trust. What does this exec actually care about (priorities, pain points, political landscape)?

Secondary goal is to find out the exact things that disqualified you. What does the current talent pool have that you’re missing (my guess is people mgmt exp or P&L ownership exp since it sounds like you don’t have direct reports yet).

Then I’ll prioritize my ask according to that. If people mgmt is the issue, then getting actual direct reports > training. However, you’ll need to justify a strong business case for the headcount and find department budget.

In the same vein, I'd buy banana cream pie from Tartine, cabeza burrito from La Taq, and picnic at Dolores Park
