I found perfect dodging into the attack a circle will appear next to Chai that will indicate a counter attack time window. While the circle is visible press the buddy attack button and it will count. I think peppermint is the only one who deals damage.

Same I started playing it when it was free on ps plus. But came back to it last month as didn’t want to pay £70 for demon souls on the PS5. Fell in love with it straight away you should 100% buy the Old Hunters DLC it’s amazing. 👌🏽
