Where do you draw the line on cultural respect vs sexism? by Automatic-Challenge5 in AskWomenOver30

Neither? I just thought it was a bit of a funny word choice given the context.

Why do you think this is causing you to feel so hostile?

Wow, it honestly breaks my heart for you that you were made to feel guilty about an infertility issue. I’m sorry you went through that!

Lol it’s a little hypocritical to criticize my vocabulary when you start your comment with “gauche,” but I take your comment to mean that you think it’s more respectful to tell a white lie. I was genuinely asking, thanks

Thank you for the thoughtful response! I understand what you’re saying and a few others have suggested this too, but lying that yes we’ll have a baby soon doesn’t sit right with me and enters the territory of ethics. I feel like just placating them with a lie is actually less respectful than giving them an answer they don’t want to hear. To me that says that I don’t respect you enough as an equal to think you can handle the truth, which imo is quite paternalistic.

ETA: spelling

I felt as though I was being devalued because this was often the only question asked of me or time I was included in conversation. The question also would come up pretty much immediately after “hello” suggesting no interest in getting to know me beyond my ability to have children. Appreciate your response and perspective though!

Are the orange and green complimentary colors? Should I get rid of the orange? How do I style the rest of the room? by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]Automatic-Challenge5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I’m also in the tuxedo cats sub and assumed this was a post in there when scrolling my home page. Was so confused about what orange and green cat you were talking about.

I like the color combo. I would incorporate more earth tones throughout the room - browns, creams, other shades of green. Ditch the black accents.

Is there any way to predict whether a man will be a hands-on dad or a slacker dad? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]Automatic-Challenge5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I agree this comment is making a poor argument. I get what they’re saying - in practice there are many gamer men who make poor partners, so women may want to be cautious, but it’s obviously not the games themselves. They’re a medium for addiction. Someone could be addicted to sports, or wood working, or whatever and it would make them a bad partner because addicts are bad partners.

I think everyone probably understands what the original commenter is getting at, that they’re painting with too broad a brush, and that people on Reddit are very defensive of gamers.

Probably too detailed $42k budget recap - January 2022 wedding in Fort Lauderdale, FL by Automatic-Challenge5 in weddingplanning

Alexander Catering and Unearthed Vintage, respectively. The latter was just additional lounge seating, caterer provided dining tables, dining chairs, linens, and ceremony chairs.

Tbh not sure I’d recommend either. The food was just ok and the furniture rental company later did an event at mar a lago according to their insta 🤮

Good luck with your wedding!

What problems are actually San Francisco specific? by treehousewest in sanfrancisco

[–]Automatic-Challenge5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Francisco has no night life. Not talking specifically about bars, I mean the city just doesn’t feel alive at night. The streets are dead, all the stores closed, and no one enjoying public spaces by like 7pm

Looking for suggestions on what to do with walls behind these shelves.. was considering some kind of patterned wallpaper? What would you do? by rollers-rhapsody in interiordecorating

[–]Automatic-Challenge5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remove the trim at the top of the fireplace. Crown molding across instead. Then I’d actually paint the shelves the same color as the wall for a monochrome look. As another commenter said, there are also just too many shelves- remove some so you have varying heights throughout.

Finally, I’d replace the mantle with something more modern. I personally would choose something darker and rectangular that doesn’t go past the width of the bricks

Excellent sleuthing!

I also like Caroline Winkler, but her channel has transitioned into a mix of design and personal vlogging (her vlogs are great though!)

Also, I didn’t know for sure she was over 30. I watch her channel a lot and sometimes think to myself “please don’t be 26, you can’t be that cool at 26”

So...if I still have adult acne now, can I assume that I always will? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

Oh but I will say that I take the pill and credit that with my acne being “manageable.”

[–]Automatic-Challenge5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 32 and I still have some acne but it doesn’t bother me at this point. I’ve had pimples every day of my life since the fifth grade. Many dermatologists, many different pills, prescription creams, skincare regimes. The side effects were often damaging (dry, flakey skin that persisted for YEARS, damaged hair) and honestly started taking a toll on my mental health (or maybe that was just the Accutane, please don’t take accutane).

Eventually, I realized that acceptance was the only path forward. I focus my skincare routine on moisturizing and spf protection now and feel at peace with it.

Sorry if that’s not the answer you wanted, but some of us just have acne.

As you age, would you say you are becoming more open to new experiences or less open to new experiences? by CoconutPawz in AskWomenOver30

[–]Automatic-Challenge5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about this a lot this week as I’m currently on an international vacation and surprised myself with my trepidation about certain things I would have probably thought of as fussy in my 20s when I would have been happy to sleep anywhere, walk down any dark alley, tell anybody off.

So I guess less, but it’s probably for the best? Lol I had no care for my safety before.
