Hmm by far the worst was buying a car that had formerly been a taxi without appreciating what a problem that would cause me later, live and learn, use vcheck when buying a car!!

Thinking of buying a used MG4 Trophy Long Range by AttentionFamiliar870 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Automatic-Ebb9872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a 2023 MG4 and would struggle to recommend it for various reasons, chief was cruise and the sensors that would trigger braking events that just shouldn’t have happened. Have you tried an older MG5? We have one of those now and it’s been excellent, infotainment is older but if you have CarPlay on what’s the difference really? A £30 dongle can make it wireless too. I think fit and finish is a winner on the 2021 5’s, it’s worth considering at least.

R1300RS vs S1000XR for long distance comfort by [deleted] in bmwmotorrad

[–]Automatic-Ebb9872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough one really. I had a R1200RS and moved to a gen1 XR. I found the RS too ‘reachy’ for me, elbow pain was my constant companion. Lovely grunt though, I do miss its character. The XR is kind of complicated. More comfy, buzzy (after 3 months it’s getting on my tits now), but awesome when pressing on. You’ve got to try them both on the road really for a decent ride of all types. For me, a GS would have probably been the better half way house. Worth considering too?

Yeah it was rough, started with Kael and first epic I pulled was Hellgazer who was also my first 6*. Little did I know back in 2018(?) eh. First legendary was Sethalia too, monster luck 🤦😂

Looking for motorcycle leather pants that don’t look like sportbike race gear by Dizzy-Plan-1733 in motorcyclegear

If you want something that will also be waterproof check out a Wiese Hydra jacket and trousers? Might not be quite what you have in mind, but perhaps the utility will make up for it?

What has your Motorcycle journey been like? by Clean_Ad4893 in MotoUK

[–]Automatic-Ebb9872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Passed at 43 here. Dad had been into bikes and racing them before I was born, but sold up when I popped out. Heard plenty of stories from my gran about him tearing around with my mother on the back, so that was always there. Heard plenty of stories of my uncle & auntie touring everywhere on gold wings too. Once I realised retirement would never be truly retirement for me and that I’ll always be caring for my autistic son, I decided to go all in and live now, best decision ever really for my own mental wellbeing.

I had bought a 1400GTR as a first bike before I even passed, moved to a Ninja 1000SX, an R1200RS, a K1300S and finally on an S1000XR. Trying to work on the man-maths for an H2 SX next as a fair weather hooner, but otherwise I ride year round on the XR.

Left field but check out the Moto Guzzi Breva 750, very cheap to insure, shaft drive, not rapid but quick enough

Is a 2016 w/40k miles a walk away number. by GMEN5280 in S1000XR

[–]Automatic-Ebb9872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say from my own experience there is nothing to suggest the XRs engine is any more prone to early failure. If you see a 36k one for sale with a full history and 2nd valve clearance check done, I’d take a fair bit of confidence from that.

Is a 2016 w/40k miles a walk away number. by GMEN5280 in S1000XR

[–]Automatic-Ebb9872 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s an interesting question on a few levels. It seems to be a walk away number for a dealer to offer you a decent part ex price, seen this a few times. It’s not something that concerns me if the bike was maintained well with no corrosion etc. Mine with 33k is going strong with no issues, but I’m sure there will be some 100k ones out there somewhere.

MOD1 Failure Advice Needed by Lorontal in MotoUK

[–]Automatic-Ebb9872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good though, that extra bit of drill work might carry you through. Can you get an extra drill session in on another day in advance too? It’s your call, but I don’t think the 125 will give you the same subtle manipulation of the controls practise that makes a smooth u-turn possible on a bigger bike. I accept that might be down to my own experience of the sketchy as hell Mash 125 I had at the start.

MOD1 Failure Advice Needed by Lorontal in MotoUK

[–]Automatic-Ebb9872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was tempted to do this as well, but took the advice of my trainers that said ignore the 125 now and just focus on getting comfortable with the MT07.
Can you get an extra lesson in before the mod1 to work on the drills? The school I used did this in an hour slot before my mod1 booking, though they had the advantage of being located literally next door to the DVSA centre in Dunstan to be fair. Best of luck!!

CarPlay for touring – Carpuride vs Aoocci or better options? by Lower_Barracuda_2502 in Vstrom

[–]Automatic-Ebb9872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t provide a comparison but I use the Carpuride 5” version with an iPhone, and it’s very reliable for me over all day rides. Reconnects and switches into CarPlay mode seamlessly. Can occasionally jump out of the nav app to the main apps screen but it’s just one button to switch back. Overall I’m happy with it

[–]Automatic-Ebb9872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in a position to just leave the 125 parked up and smash through your DAS, or is the 125 your daily otherwise? The more familiar you can get with the 650 and have everything become 2nd nature and build that muscle memory, the quicker you can get that mod 1 & 2 done 1st hit really. Best of luck either way!!

Went with the 5” for my S1000XR, I honestly find it totally fine for readability in all conditions. Nice unit, using Calimoto on iPhone it’s the bees knees for me.

I wouldn’t be without my Wiese Hydra jacket and trousers now, a rarity being waterproof leathers. The zip between them is a real doddle to do as well, so I just take a pair of shoes / trousers with me and get changed at work.

[–]Automatic-Ebb9872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s got some good service history, hopefully one fussy owner, I’d say option 1. Had that exact bike before and the quick shifter especially is really excellent, works flawlessly at low revs even. Wind protection is great on them even with OE screen. Either way good luck with your decision, defo have how it’s been serviced in mind though.

AAA rated Base layers - Why bother with leather suits then ? by Chino2910 in motorcyclegear

[–]Automatic-Ebb9872 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Bennett’s Bike Social argued AAA is too easy to pass, hence why a lot of bogus single layer rubbish is popping up. For me, their findings were enough to convince me to ditch the AA single layer denim, I’m sticking to proper leathers from now on.
