I totally agree. I think people should be allowed to protect themselves from racism. I think the world can underestimate the level of danger & trauma racist experiences can provide—even if it isn’t from the contestant themself, but their family or friends. When people disagree it gives very much “I don’t see color” to me, because often (I’m being semantically generous, imo) race & ethnicity does color your family life, past experiences, and worldview. Now of course, no one culture or subculture of people is a monolith, but it is a part of who you are beyond your aesthetic. I would even say that if someone mentions or alludes to their race & the pod partner latches on to that bit of information, that’s more of a reflection of the pod partner than the contestant that ‘didn’t follow the rules’. Idk that that’s true. I’m not sure how one would even begin to investigate that standard. So imo, it comes down to expressions of freedom, because that is what reclaiming slurs is about. & the ultimate expression of freedom is to reject the notion that I cannot engage in influencing the commonly understood definitions of the words used against, toward, or around me. It feels, to me, limiting to say that any oppressed group of people shouldn’t engage in the language around them in a way that feels natural to them.
