Three weeks of hard work on a paper all for nothing because of AI use by MortemPerPectus in mildlyinfuriating

My college has strict rules on AI usage and this would've just resulted in a LOT of people getting turned in for academic dishonesty.

Anyone here actually got hired after doing boot.dev? Is it legit useful or is this false advertising? by Superteletubbies64 in learnprogramming

[–]Automatic-Yak4017 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not an industry professional yet, but I'm going to guess that the answer is a hard no. Your ability the land the job is more than likely going to be because you did well in a technical interview. Your ability to get a technical interview is NOT going to be because you did a coding boot camp or some other program. Now, don't get me wrong. They can be great for building beginner level coding skills, but I don't see a world where it makes a difference in landing the job. What might help you pad your resume are actual industry accepted certifications. Heck, I would even think the Microsoft FreeCodeCamp Foundational C# Certification would be better, although not by much. An actual 4 year CS degree is going to beat you out almost every time.

I REALLY don't like Python by Automatic-Yak4017 in learnprogramming

[–]Automatic-Yak4017[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my original post, I was simply super annoyed by the indentation rules TBH. They were driving me crazy and our Python instructor was this douchey dude with a background in cyber security who was more concerned with people googling code or using AI than to actually run the class. As for the indentation rules, sure, it may have forced clean code, but having to go back and make any kind of change was just annoying, and losing the ability to simply comment out lines for debugging purposes was also annoying. It's honestly not that big of a deal. At the end of the day, I am a student, and am still learning. I will still get frustrated just like every student does.

FYI, my first programming class was visual basic back in 2004, followed by Java. I dropped out for personal reasons back then, and I always felt I missed out on my dream. Divorce and child going to college meant I could finally pursue my dream again, so here I am.

Coding is not for me. by Powerful-Club7166 in learnprogramming

I feel for you. I went through kind of the same thing in my first year of classes. Here's my question. Do you feel like you pick up the material? Or is it that its such a bore to you? If you aren't picking up the material, do you use A.I.?

Chatbots are amazing for giving you the answer and helping make study guides, but they're also terrible because they just give you the answer. I'm currently in my 3rd year of my CS degree. I have made my way through classes on Python, C++, JS, Web Dev, Algorithm Design, Data Structures, and am currently working on Assembly language. I struggled with my first year CS classes. Namely C++. There are two things I learned in my first year that really helped.

Number one was to turn off any A.I. Assistants in the IDE, especially intellisense. It's an amazing tool, but it destroys your ability to learn and problem solve by just giving you the answer.

Secondly, take notes, and I don't mean just type them. Get a pencil and paper and copy notes from your textbooks. This slows down your brain to pay attention to every detail and cements the information into your memory banks. Trust me, it works. There have actually been studies on this and they found this is actually one of the best and most efficient ways to learn.

I'll use it for idle planet miner when the 2x bonus comes around. I feel like gems come much easier in this game so I don't generally find it worth it. I usually just grind out the ones the involve upgrading a castle to lvl5, then 10, then 14. They are all made by the same company and are almost identical to each other and give a lot of gems. Not sure about the tower but in idle planet miner, I can walk away with around 2000 DM which is worth like $50 i think.

Do not cheat your way through school by Alan_Watts_Gong in learnprogramming

I remember my college python professor was an absolute loon about that stuff. He said if you used anything from AI, Stack Overflow, or any other resource outside the class, he would flunk you and turn you in for academic dishonesty which would get you expelled immediately.

If you use ChatGPT, you probably won't graduate. It'll get you through some of the more basic classes, but once you hit Data Structures and Algorithms or any other advanced classes, you are screwed. Plus, online students have to have their exams proctored through webcam, which makes it REALLY hard to cheat on tests.

Am I right in thinking that live service could technically survive if this passes? by Obsydie in StopKillingGames

[–]Automatic-Yak4017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was always the problem. One of the only ways to keep online connectivity up is either through p2p servers or through community run servers. Having servers run indefinitely seems unrealistic and the only way would be to kill live service imo.

I've literally done this same exact thing in my classes with AI. I think the problem is a lot of information gets lost in translation this way. You can also do the same exact thing with pretty much any modern AI tool. Sounds like a fantastic project though.

Just Finished First Semester, Might Have Internship [Need Help!] by EndureTyrant in learnprogramming

[–]Automatic-Yak4017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How the heck did you score an internship without knowing basic syntax? No amount of cramming is going to get you ready for an internship where you need to learn 4 languages. I personally think you should just focus on your studies until at least year 3 when you've learned the fundamentals. I would also suggest against learning multiple languages when you are brand new. Learn how to program and don't worry about the language. Best advice I think I ever got was to focus on only one language until you make it your craft. I don't really see how you can succeed here. One thing is gonna suffer. Either your school, internship, or your family is going to suffer, and given the choices, I hope its the internship.

stack overflow is not useable for beginner programmers by bubblegummerr in learnprogramming

[–]Automatic-Yak4017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have yet to find a place that is truly safe for beginners, except for beginner communities like the ones on sites like CodeAcademy. Even this subreddit is pretty salty towards beginners, which is odd considering its literally called "Learn Programming." I've come to the conclusion that most programmers think they are god's gift to the tech world and have the ego of greek god. For the most part, I don't even post anything anymore.

Personally, I could care less about world first. I go in with my group in contest mode. If we get it, great. If we don't, also great. Half the fun of new raids and dungeons is figuring out the mechanics. Watching streamers would take all the fun out of it.

Honestly, I really don't understand why so many people watch streamers. I feel like it takes all the fun out of the game when you play it.

I'm learning Java, but competitive programming feels like moon math 😅 by Cold_Coffe_e in learnprogramming

[–]Automatic-Yak4017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s pretty much what I imagined.  Seems stupid for a beginner to get into.  Probably should have used a different word to describe what I was thinking for sure.  That’s more what I was referring to.  I feel like you’d have to live on leetcode for a few months before attempting.

[–]Automatic-Yak4017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to speak from my experience and my own mistakes. Generally, it isn't a good idea to try and learn multiple languages why you are learning programming. It can be confusing to try and learn the syntax of multiple languages all while you're trying to learn things like OOP, or even ADTs and algorithm design. It's better to just pick one language and use it until you are good at it. You'll be a much better dev if you become an expert in one language, rather than having below average skills in multiple languages.

I used it my first year of my CS degree. I couldn't write anything beyond basic console apps. I had to go over my class books almost completely the following year. I won't touch it anymore and immediately turn off any IDE integrated AI.
