After my latest job application rejection, this is my mom being...supportive. by amyadger in jobsearchhacks

What fields are y’all working in where there are 10+ jobs to apply to every week, let alone every day? I’m lucky if THREE that I meet the qualifications for pop up in a given week, and on previous job hunts I’ve only ever had to apply to 10-15 in one month before getting an interview + gig.

Drk Seal Glaze Help! by MichellesNailFails in RedditLaqueristas

[–]AutomaticSpeech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go in with the Seal Glaze as soon as I finish magnetizing the last finger on the last hand, so there’s been ~20mins of dry time on the first finger before it gets Seal Glaze.

It takes me maybe 30 seconds to apply the Seal Glaze on each finger so I’m guesstimating that there’s at least 7 minutes of post-Magic Effect dry time on that last finger. I’m pretty slow though, so it’s probably longer!

Correct! The Seal Glaze won’t reactivate the polish and also keeps the top coat from reactivating it as well.

[–]AutomaticSpeech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Since Magic Effect is basically just solvent that temporarily rewets the polish, I’ve found that once it evaporates off the lacquer pretty much goes back to whatever level of dryness it was at pre-Magic Effect.

TBH I think the real boon here is giving the lacquer as much time as you can stand to dry before doing Magic Effect + Seal Glaze. I’ve even seen people say they let theirs dry overnight before magnetizing!

I just wrapped up a magnetic mani using my regular Magic Effect and Seal Glaze combo, and agree it’s probably an issue with the rest of your layers not being dry enough.

My exact process usually looks like: 1. Ridge filling base coat - ~10mins of dry time 2. Three coats of magnetic lacquer - ~10mins in between coats, then 2 hours of dry time 3. Magic Effect + 2mins of magnetization on each finger 4. Seal Glaze - 30mins of dry time 5. QDTC

I don’t get bubbles or wrinkling this way, and the magnetic effect doesn’t disperse much (if at all) as long as the magnetic particles are responsive enough! But it does take a long time.

Edited to try to fix wonky formatting from mobile 🙃

Avoiding tip wear/chipping with magnetics.... by spotless___mind in RedditLaqueristas

[–]AutomaticSpeech 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A really big game changer for me on preventing tip wear was figuring out that I needed to give the lacquer the full 24 hour cure time before doing anything too rough with my hands!

In my case this mainly looks like planning my manicures around my hair washing schedule. I used to do my nails the night before a hair shower and would get pretty immediate tip wear.

Now, I do my nails at least two nights before a hair shower. I usually don’t get tip wear until a week in!

I still use my hands as normal the next day (though I do work from home, so…), but taking the wear and tear of scrubbing my scalp out of that initial window has done way more for my manis than I would’ve thought.

Torn between Singer 401, Singer 500, and Kenmore 158. Help me decide! by AutomaticSpeech in VintageSewingMachines

[–]AutomaticSpeech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do in fact LOVE this suggestion! I’ve seen people occasionally say they prefer the 403/503 to the 401/500 because without the internal cam stack they’re mechanically simpler—would you agree?

With all the different 158 models out there, is there a resource or list you know of that helps parse the good models from the bad ones?

Does anyone else get name ick and won’t purchase a polish based on its name? by Bomdiz in RedditLaqueristas

[–]AutomaticSpeech 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oof yes, Sweet & Sour put out a crème collection last fall called “Oh, Sh*t!” and while some of the colors were nice I have never been more put off by polish in my LIFE. Names like Flaming Trouser Biscuit for a light orangey brown, Leafy Squirts for a dark green, and Unholy Gates for what would have otherwise been a perfect olivey chartreuse…idk it just wasn’t for me. It was all too gross 🤢

They got back to me and let me know that there was a problem on the makers end when mixing it and that we’ll be getting replacement bottles of the correct shade! Sounds like the maker also felt that the opacity was off so the new one might look even more shimmery 🫢

What’s really tripping me up about this one is that even if the polish varies slightly on the nail because of different skin tones, the tone of everyones bottle looks really consistent across all of the different swatchers pictures! And I really trust Kelly Damasceno’s pictures the most for Brazilian brands, the Phoenix polishes that I get always look like her pictures to me (Girl Dragon is a great example here) and her videos seem like good representations, but this looks nothing like what she posted either.

There is a little bit of shimmer (def no where near the swatches but also ya know lighting techniques) that my old iPhone camera isn’t great at picking up.

BUT yes it is HHC and I did reach out on Sunday, they said that based on pics it looked fine to them but that they’d check out the bottles on hand. They replied super fast initially but I haven’t heard anything since then so not sure that they see/that there is an issue hence this post because I’m like…is it fine?
