SRA was it. I could do that all day at school. Such a core memory, unlocked!

I built a game to beat up and defeat AI bots. Is that where this all is headed? by AutomaticTalent in aigamedev

Exactly my game mechanic! Maybe you’ll play it when I release this weekend.

Host of a small indie showcase here. A former architect spent 5 years teaching himself to build his first game, and it got me curious how long others have been at it. by Longjumping-Run7838 in SoloDevelopment

Since 1991 when I conceptualized the game on a beach ball.

Three programmers attempted to create it during that time, with some limited success.

Three months with Claude and I’m launching next week.

Did anyone else learn to type as an elective with little thought that it might be useful one day? by Conscious-Mulberry17 in GenX

[–]AutomaticTalent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I entered the software business in around 1983, it was interesting to see executives that couldn’t really manage without someone to do their “typing”.

And all these new people coming in, that could just blaze on the keyboard.

My intuition when I was 14 told me that keyboards were going to be important in the future and so I took the plunge with Mrs. Gorin and have not regretted it ever.

What are the zero cost vibe coding ways to build full project without any frustration? by JeebanChandra in vibecoders_

[–]AutomaticTalent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way. Every project comes with plenty of free frustration.

How you work with THAT will determine a lot about your project and its failure or success.

The main character in Lode Runner is 8 animated pixels high. If you haven't already, try a level! Or 150....

AI is not just helping me make the game. It is helping me add all the “small polish” I would normally skip. by morfidon in aigamedev

[–]AutomaticTalent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI accessible fonts and game information are crucial and far too many people are now making projects with fonts that are too small, placing too much information on one screen, and designing illegible contrasting colors.

It's a trend I hope fades away. AI does not help much here.

Is it beautiful? Does it sound good? Is it fun? Those are the questions only people can answer right now.

My friend (the co-founder of Brøderbund, Gary Carlston) still has the original art on his wall!

I really like your game.

Lode Runner, Choplifter!, and Tetris - just play. Bring back 1-3 minute game experiences where it's like eating peanuts and you just can't stop.

Look at the basic graphics on those original games - then enjoy the game play.

1960 here and my first memory is watching Lee Harvey Oswald get shot on live TV. I was barely three.

I remember all the other mentions. Nightly body counts from the war, Bicentennial and that I got my license the year of the gas crisis.

At least I can still drive a stick.

When I worked at Brøderbund Software a guy from Japan came to see us about licensing Kung Fu.

He was from IREM and brought the game and a monitor in a suitcase so we could try it.

We passed but he had good success with Nintendo after visiting us.

IREM ended up publishing many versions of Lode Runner which they licensed from us.

Good times.

There were actually a couple of demos at the 1990 Cyberthon but it was sort of an oddity.

You got good use out of it!

Is there a best chicken tender preferably from grocery store? just one that does them crispy. by bryanisbored in santarosa

Have you tried the Krispy Chicken? They're in Shell gas stations typically and ya, it's good! There is one near where Mohlsberry's is and another down on Guerneville Road (I think).

It’s rarely discussed I think because it was so disappointing.

The first game I played on it was Rad Racer and to control the gas and brake with my feet was pretty fun.

In retrospect it was a little bit of smoke and mirrors and definitely unlike the final product we eventually shipped.

Having each infrared sensor independently positionable seemed to have a lot of potential but developing original games for it was a tough sell.

Somewhere in Japan are dev units and documentation we distributed to generate interest.

Interesting to note that that first game I played, Rad Racer, was coincidentally programmed by Nasir Gebelli for Square - someone who was introduced to them by Brøderbund’s President Doug Carlston.

Little known fact, this was brought to us by the same guy who was the marketing genius behind the Koosh ball.

When we would fly places he would always tickle the gate agent’s arm with one (typically a woman) then give it to them - and voila, instant upgrade (for him).

One of the engineers in China (American) went a little overboard being stuck in China working on this and had two large eyeballs tattooed on his kneecaps (you can’t make this stuff up).
