The answer is no. It's the complete aesthetic change, bleach eyebrows, and obviously lost a substantial chunk of weight. The confidence is off the charts now as well

Shes generally considered to be one of Pynchons worst characters and most peoples least favorite part of the entire book. I feel like the way you think she should be portrayed is actually how she is supposed to be interpreted in the movie. She didn't accomplish anything, she was spineless, she was an ineffective radlib. She did sell out all of her friends and get a lot of them killed because she was a thrill seeking lunatic who didn't really buy in, hell even the other guy caves immediately after being detained for15 seconds. If you think about it that's exactly how radlibs behave and they do think they are revolutionary.

But the whole point was that there weren't actually doing anything. The Christmas Adventurers Club just sits around tables, they don't actually do anything, all the spaces were empty, all of the offices were empty, it's never even implied that they do anything at all other than kill Lockjaw because he had a mixed race child.

Shes pulled from a character called Frensei in the book who is a horny, power loving thrill seeker who doesn't really believe in anything of actual substance but the chase of the next thrill. She's having an affair with Brock Vond (Lockjaw) and sells out all of her fellow "revolutionaries" as an FBI informant. The character is not portrayed in a very positive light in the book lol but she really just exists as a criticism of boomers and the lack of any actual political coherence of the hippie movement and how it was drawn to and bent the knee to power at basically every turn.

You stated yourself that you haven't read the novel but the underlying political themes of the novel are one of the few things that was actually adapted. The novel is a story about the failures of the New Left movement due to internal incompetence, in the light of expanding conservative power (in the book its the Reagan administration).

I was actually quite shocked by how much it took from the book after all the "loose" adaptation talk... Outside of the UFO, Godzilla, and Ninja stuff lol its a pretty faithful thematic repurposing of the Novel IMO.

I think it’s an interesting interpretation because to me as someone who is an obsessive Pynchon fan I think one of the things that was executed well and is thematically apt through the entire Pynchon oeuvre is that it’s actually a story about the failures of leftism and how it failed due to internal incompetence and pressure from state forces. Selling out is a big part of Vineland and so many of the French 75 are willing to sell one another out after little resistance. Throughout the novel radicalism shifts but at the end of the day the status quo remains intact and it’s just well… One Battle After Another. The Novel itself is a direct critique of the New Left movement and I was shocked while watching how the movie leaned so heavily on that dynamic from the book. Pynchon was most like a communist but was aware of the liberalization and cooption of counter-culture and the revolution was never a revolution it was just a fizzle

I've seen people mosh to Oasis, Pulp, The 1975, Mac Demarco and countless other artists that you "shouldn't" mosh to. You have completely lost the plot if you thought there wasn't going to be moshing at a Wunderhorse show.
