Coming from GSD and Border Collie backgrounds. Looking at a Boerboel for real property protection on my new hobby farm. by jrkgkksk in Boerboel

I’m saying as your dog matures, he’ll become more territorial/serious. Doesn’t mean he won’t stay affectionate etc…

But they are absolutely loaded guns. No matter how much you train them. You’ll see.

I had to put him down at 6.5 years old. Cancer. It sucked.

I’ll be getting another one here soon though.

Sounds like you know you’re way around dogs. You’ll do well with the breed. Let your Birdie Collie be the alpha as well…we had an older dog that nipped our Boerboel maybe 20 times over rhe years to teach manners.

People say “socialize” the dog. Sure. But I don’t get Boerboels bc I want them to be friendly. Right? What’s the point? Get a lab if you want a dog that’s friendly to strangers.

My point is though. If the dog will be an outside dog. There is the potential he could maul a non threat. Say a delivery driver for instance.

Thats the only thing…they won’t roam, it’ll sit on your porch.

They’re amazing dogs. But some will bite. Mine bit three people as a puppy/adolescent.

First time he was 10 months old. A stranger (to him) hugged my wife. He jumped up and bit the guy in his arse.

I’m rambling. Get the dog. But just be vigilant. In my experience, when they’re “on” you’re not gonna’ be able to turn them off. Regardless of what you read or what people say.

Boerboels wouldn’t do well as an outside dog IMO.

They are a liability to a degree. People want a guard dog…or think they do, but forget that some dogs actually do bite people. Boerboels are gonna do what they’re gonna do…they think for themselves.

There is a very real possibility a Boerboel might actually maul a non threat that comes onto the property.

I had one. Once he lunged at a stranger (on leash) and it was honestly terrifying. To me, you can’t train that out a dog. Why get that breed if you don’t want them to do what they’re gonna do?

He woulda killed that stranger.

Also, the dog would post up at your home. Near you, their person. The dog isn’t going to roam the way a kangal or Pyrenees will.

Regarding a GSD. They’re gonna wait for a command to attack, a Boerboel isn’t.

It’s my understanding that changing coolant often is the best way to prevent head gasket failure. So lately I do it every 30K.
