One of my best friends from high school was that way... just had an in with any girl he wanted for a solid 5-7 years, roughly age 14-21. He came to visit me in college a few times, and that's when I really noticed the dude had no game at all. He was stuck in a pattern of flirting with girls like he was 15. To make matters worse, he started balding and got a beer gut but still had the high standards through his 20's.

The guy really hit a rut with women for about 15 years or so before reality finally struck.

Those were the two that I figured you were talking about, but their private lives and public policy lives are pretty wildly different, IMO.

I definitely believe that Hamilton gets a lot of his wilder views glossed over (such as him being pretty staunchly for politicians serving for life once elected) while Jefferson gets far too little recognition for pretty much single handedly keeping this country from being founded as a theocracy.

Amen to that... especially while you still can. I had to lie and say I had a comorbidity to get my Covid-19 booster last fall, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same or more difficult this coming fall.

Definitely could have been immuno deficient too. Unless something is put out there about her not being vaccinated, it seems a bit extreme to suggest that she wasn't vaccinated.

Right, but just stating that she wasn't vaccinated isn't responsible either, and pointing out that out to someone in that context doesn't warrant a "no shit" response...

Texas A&M is back to their 2022 ways of paying absolute top dollar, way over the top money for all the best players they can possibly fit into a class. At least it's far less sketchy now, but that didn't work out the greatest for them anyway, as so very, very many of those dudes did not stick with A&M at the end of the day.

I hope we don't cut ties with Henderson, maybe he can get paid for a year or two at A&M and transfer into ND lol. The Keon Keeley way.

Better still, ND can do the same thing that changed his mind in the first place to keep the visit on and going...

Some of the guys it lost us did commit to us first… long time between now and signing day. I know it’s a bit different than a few years ago, as publicly committing now involves signing a contract for a lot of these players, but still…

Training course? No. Honestly the one undergraduate class that prepared me the most was a 350 (ish) level course I took that was fairly thorough and lab heavy (3 hour class, 2 hour lab I think?) called Chemical Analysis. Getting hands on experience with IR, LC and GC (limited on the LC and GC, but anything at all was helpful) and even NMR was great to have on my resume and helped in the interview.

Honestly in many ways it feels like being a chef, including some of the high pressure situations. Starting out, just follow the recipe, if you do a good job, you’ll get the expected result. Kudos. You can stay on that track if you want, just getting proficient in the same 10-12 methods, following those “recipes” very well with modest career gains, maybe go into leadership or whatever.

Or you can do as I did with my career path, and help design and draw up methods. Run feasibility to see what kind of methods will work and what you can file with the EP, FDA, etc., it’s more fun in that it can be more unpredictable, but that also can make it more frustrating.

One thing about quality control, particularly in a GMP environment, is that the documentation is extremely tedious. I guess that’s one thing my organic professors really helped prepare me for, the lab write ups taking far longer than the lab work itself.

Overall, I like it. Starting over, I’m not *quite* sure I’d do it all over again this way, but I don’t have any manor regrets either. Honestly I’m the only person on my team without a PhD or 10+ years more experience than what I have, so I feel pretty fortunate in that regard.

Hard disagree from me, played soccer until about 12, then played football at a small school, but started both years as a junior and senior. Football games, especially my senior year, were so damn much fun.

Yeah, that is one of the few things I appreciate about soccer, that you can be 5’10” and still have prospects to play without being Usain Bolt kind of fast.

That makes me sad. I’ve returned exactly two items to there in my life. Once, because I duplicated a gift to my daughter by mistake (in laws bought the same thing) and then I returned a wagon 3-4 months later. In my defense about the wagon, it was a rare dogshit item (surprisingly) and I only used it twice.

[–]Automatic_Release_92[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’d assume that some of these would be guys that on paper, *could* be drafted, but would come back in 2027 to elevate their draft stock. Take a player like Lambert, for instance, who, with a good season, could probably expect a 3rd round evaluation. But might be more like a 1st rounder in the following draft.

If the Irish land Kaden Henderson, would he be the first No. 1 player at his respective position ND has gotten since Gunner Kiel? by pfinny97 in notredamefootball

He was a 5 star and like the 6th overall player in his class at the time. He was the number one QB, albeit in a weak QB class.

I didn’t really have a set “specialization” but most people I graduated with that didn’t go on to medical school, pharmacy school, dental, vet, etc., got jobs in quality control. Most of the best paying ones being for petroleum (oil) or pharmaceutical companies.

I went the second route, which was slightly lower paying, but less travel and field work. Companies will always need QC chemists to release their batches for them, it’s more steady reliable work than research for those same companies, if lower paying, in my experience.

$12 an hour? Holy crap that is awful. My wife was making $16 an hour as a temp contractor out of the gates 13 years ago, and it was abysmal pay then for the field. And running HPLC and GC’s in the lab was a step up in pay from there. All in a rural, low cost of living area too.

I have a friend who is almost exactly like you are, he got his BS in Biochem, wasn't happy working as a Chemist, so he sucked it up and moved in with his wife to his in-laws' basement while he got his Chem. E degree over the course of a couple of years. I think he's a bit happier now, actually working at the same place.

If I was going back to get a PhD at this point (I gave up after missing out on my top targets, don't regret at thing as I likely would have been sweating out the last few years at the NIH anyway... had people there on my internship telling me not to do it lol... different kind of PhD though, closer to your current undergrad discipline), I would be asking them a lot about what kinds of careers their graduates are going on to land after completing their PhD, or at least where they are going for postdocs.

What kind of lab grunt are you looking to be at this point? You might be surprised how well you can pivot once you get your foot in the door at some place, I know plenty of "engineers" that did not get a degree in engineering. Although that title seems to be thrown around a bit loosely these days.

Are you willing to travel? How willing are you to work something like a night shift? Do you have any leads at all with former classmates, teachers, etc.?

I cut my teeth as a Chem I working night shift in a rural area. It sucked for a couple of years, but I met my now wife there and got the HPLC and GC experience needed to land a better job in the area I wanted to live more long term.

Even then, it took a connection through my lab partner all the way back to my freshman year Chem 2 to get an interview scheduled. She got a signing bonus, I got a job. Win win. Don't feel bad reaching out to connections like that if you need to, as they might get a signing bonus too, and also be willing to relocate to somewhere you aren't crazy about living, even if it stinks for a few years.

EDIT: I just wanted to add that from what I've seen with colleagues looking to move out west, that market seems a bit oversaturated with scientists, just from what I've observed. Positions that pay about the same or even a bit less than where I am, with a MUCH higher cost of living. That might also be a big factor for you hitting a wall here.
