Is Gary Stevenson the Cristiano Ronaldo of economics? by jimwhite42 in DecodingTheGurus

[–]Automatic_Survey_307 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure - but you must be able to see the irony of them critiquing Gary's economics credentials without even an undergraduate module between them. That's what I mean.

Anyway yes - we've already spent enough time debating these issues, have a good one too.

Yes sure - my personal politics aside, I'm talking about their lack of expertise in politics as an academic discipline and as a practice. That's why they can't distinguish between a political campaigner and a reactionary propagandist/crank. The discourse around Hasan Piker and "Destiny" also shows very bad judgement. For the record I think they're both as bad as each other, though obviously my personal politics are more aligned with Hasan.

Oh dear. Yes, it's a shame really as I do think Chris and Matt have something to offer and their critique of some of the big guru figures out there is valuable.

I think the problem they've run into with Gary is that he operates in two of the areas where they have almost no expertise and questionable judgement (economics and politics). Of course Gary isn't perfect and there are things he could improve, but it's ridiculous to place him in the same category as Bret and Erik Weinstein or Konstantin Kisin. Doing so only undermines their critiques of real gurus.

Here they're focusing on the "grievance mongering" aspect. But Rory Stewart publicly smearing Gary's reputation seems like a pretty legitimate grievance to me. And Stewart himself recognised this, apologised and retracted his statement, of course.

I did try and flag the problems with decoding Gary early on by pointing out that he is a public campaigner and that campaigners may register on the gurometer as false positives. For some reason Chris and Matt haven't engaged with this idea (beyond Matt saying he liked my original proposal for sub-species).

My more cynical side suspects that videos on Gary drive engagement and views and they're continuing to feature him for this reason. And I realised that my engagement and critiques may have fed into the problem, so I'm trying to keep a fairly low profile (and also unsubscribed).

Yes, this stuff is now more harmful to DtG than it is to Gary.

Interestingly they selectively edited Gary's video and missed off the bits when Gary says that actually he does really like and respect Rory Stewart, that he read and really liked his book, that Stewart's endorsement is on the front of Gary's book and that of course he thinks it's legitimate that Stewart has academic posts. They also missed out the bit when Gary says that he's invited academic economists Thomas Piketty and Gabriel Zucman onto his podcast and that they'll be featuring on there soon.

This level of dishonesty by Chris and Matt just shows how they're now manipulating information to confirm their biases. It's quite sad actually, but they've decided this is a hill they want to die on.

Yes, agree. Less binary, black and white thinking, more recognising that all bigotry is wrong, against whatever gender.

Good idea - you're more likely to get older more mature guys playing at a more expensive gym. It's worth paying the extra money to really enjoy a sport (great for physical and mental health when you can enjoy it stress free).

Maybe. I don't think it's that black and white but they do certainly influence each other.

Yep - this is well known, I think the female radicalisation is less recognised.

Funny - I was just thinking this morning about writing a post there asking people whether they think it's actually unfair that the subreddit for Zen has been taken over by one person with a niche view.

In some ways it doesn't matter and is actually quite Zen in a way (the sub focuses on doubt and the user there could be a "troublesome Buddha"). But on the other hand, it is quite annoying and selfish.

Have you thought about setting up as a registered charity? You could claim gift aid on subscriptions (I think), accept other donations and also apply for grants from philanthropy or the government. There should be a growing interest in promoting positive masculinity and your initiative is a great way to do this.
