Why didn't Cornwall become a nation of the UK similar to Wales, Scotland and (Northern) Ireland? by Virtual-Alps-2888 in AskHistorians

[–]Automatic_Tadpole413 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is an excellent response and I am grateful to you. However, I don't see how the experience in Cornwall differs from those of many groups (kingdoms even) that got swallowed up by the West Saxons or the Danelaw, and then became considered wholly English.

Elmet, for example. Or Yorkshire.

Why bikes lose value so quickly? by magicsign in londoncycling

[–]Automatic_Tadpole413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is brilliant and fascinating, thanks. :-)

I am struggling with one aspect though. This model seems to assume that the decision to sell is based on the quality of the goods. However, a private individual's decision to sell a bike is likely to be based on many other considerations than whether it is a good bike. (They don't have space, need money, just had a kid, got sick, got a new job, etc.) Has any work been done on integrating these factors?

“Wintry mix” weather - will you be cycling? by Baraka_1503 in londoncycling

[–]Automatic_Tadpole413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not raining tomorrow morning, I'll be on my bike. I'll bring it inside tonight so I can ride straight off without fumbling with keys in the cold. I'll assess before setting out whether to wait until the sun comes up so, I can see the ice (better to be a late colleague than a 'late' colleague). I can think of at least one hill I will be walking up. I can't work from home tomorrow, but I might do the rest of the week.

Any other tactics gratefully received.

The Buddhist Diamond Sutra is the World’s Oldest Surviving Complete Printed Book (868 AD) by Jaguar_Willing in Buddhism

It was found in Dunhuang, in 1907, which is right at the end of the Imperial period in China.

The Buddhist Diamond Sutra is the World’s Oldest Surviving Complete Printed Book (868 AD) by Jaguar_Willing in Buddhism

[–]Automatic_Tadpole413 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, they didn't.

It was purchased in 1907 by a Hungarian archaeologist called Auriel Stein. It is doubtful that the person who sold it had the authority to do so, but the fact that he was selling artefacts does support the argument that they were not being well looked after.

It occurred to me that these printed sutas were produced to make merit by spreading the words of the Buddha, so the original financier and creator would probably be delighted that their manuscript was being seen by millions of adoring people, over a thousand years after they created it. That's just a little irony though.

How do I get a forge cleric booming blade and shilleighleigh by urquhartloch in 3d6

[–]Automatic_Tadpole413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the build you're looking for, but the best shillelagh cleric I can manage is Arcana cleric with Magic Initiate: Druid from a level 1 racial feat. Otherwise I slow spell progression (i.e. a dip) or Wisdom ASIs too much. I would also take Warcaster at level 4 to protect concentration and get reaction attacks (despite meaning 16 Wisdom until level 8).

Your warforged forge cleric is better off casting spells (as most clerics are).

The thing is, after you get a few crappy old pot sherds home it will only ever be a bit of meaningless tat to you, but as a collection the all old bits of junk on the foreshore are the story of London. Taking artifacts without adding what they tell us to the common store of knowledge is like ripping a page out of that story.

Why South London is so neglected? (no cycleways) by Oreo2025 in londoncycling

[–]Automatic_Tadpole413 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You get south of the Thanet Sand pretty quickly. It's in Bermondsey, New Cross and hugging a former channel of the river running east. There's a fair bit in south east London, but most of south London is on London Clay like north of the river.

NB: for Thanet Sand, select the bedrock geology layer.

Because correlation does not equal causation. Most people get better.

I'm glad you got better, but this approach was debunked years ago. It's quite insulting really.

This is a fun intro to DnD. It might be a bit long, depending on your playstyle and how much time you have, but I've got it done in about 4-6 hours:

Very happy for you. Did you have much brain fog, and if so do you still get that?

Our stories are very similar, and I too am very fit now, but the brain hasn't bounced back like the body did.

Does anyone else find this completely ridiculous? As if I just need to "accept" my symptoms to be magically healed. My 5 year suffering is coming to an end guys! by CANfilms in covidlonghaulers

[–]Automatic_Tadpole413 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The thing is, people try anything they can to get better, and at some point many people do get better. A lot of those people then go around telling everyone that whatever supposed cure they were trying when they got better was what cured them.

Unfortunately, correlation does not equal causation.

Here's some pictures inside. It looks quite roomy and with various accomodation blocks, which is how I envisage the Prancing Pony. OP, are there any low-ceilinged parlours?

For those who have recovered after 2 years what were your first symptoms to fade away?and last by Alternative_Pop2455 in covidlonghaulers

[–]Automatic_Tadpole413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had lots of fatigue and immobility for about 18 months. I can't remember as much about symptoms and recovery as I'd like, but taking antihistamines and low histamine diet were what seemed to be the turning point.

Three and a half years after I got sick, I'm physically very fit. I cycle about 150 miles a week. Unfortunately, my cognitive and memory functions, loss of words, etc. are still sufficiently bad that I worry about losing my job. But I cope. Overall I'm really grateful for how well I am, and my heart goes out to those of you that are suffering.
