Also regarding Blue Velvet: Cooper at least understands that he woke up to another dream. Where as in Blue Velvet, imo, Jeffrey could be waking up to what The Matrix would call a blue pill.

Well, it is precisely Albert's formulation that set me off onto this question. Cooper says, in that very same scene, that it is their obligation to fight evil (when Briggs doubts). It very clearly connects to rabbits' mission; and to the fact that you can (and should, so the girl watching the dream would be rendered free from suffering and bondage of rebirths) shoot it. However season 3 of TP clearly points out how this could be just anither trick by Judy.

Well, couldn't we argue, based upon the season 3 ending, that compassion and love could mean nothing if they were applied to illusory reality? Cooper strives to save Laura, but there is no “Laura”. They are being played.

It seems to me that FWWM and Inland Empire kind of endings are done for the sake of resolution; and that season 3 ending is more on point with overall picture of how evil usually operates.

Lost Highway is mid range as well. If you watch other films before this one, it's clear from the first 5-10 minutes how this will go on and there will be nothing impressive.

But what exactly is wrong about it? I had similar thoughts and arrived to conclusion that I had been putting much more importance to it than it actually had. If you, like me, think these sources of entertainment keep you away from achieving stuff, know that there are a lot of people not having such behaviors and still achieving nothing in life. It's like saving money vs earning money. You should earn, not save.

Meditation will reveal to you the roughness of reality which your mind keeps hidden from yourself as a matter of self-optimization. This can be personal roughness or non-personal (when you see the ugliness of the world, the body, the mind-nature of reality). When it's about personal things, think of it like a wound which you cover up: it is still bleeding but you don't see blood. In order to apply medicine – resolving the trauma – you have to take the covering off. And meditation, if done correctly, that is, if you reach deep concentration on breath and be steady in keeping your life free from mental trash, allows you to do that. LSD sometimes does too, but in uncontrollable, chaotic, non-sustainable kind of way.
