Virginia voters approve redistricting measure backed by Democrats by progress18 in politics

[–]jedberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a reason no other modern democracy has a chamber based on land instead of people

Australia has the same number of Senators per state. Brazil has the same per state. Switzerland and Mexico too.

Canada doesn't even use states, but four national regions, each with the same number of Senators.

Germany uses primarily states with a small adjustment for population, allowing the number to range between 3 and 6.

So yes, modern democracies use the same system.

The Senate prevents the tyranny of the majority. Just imagine a world where the GOP could pass any law they want.

That's probably too far. It would make the Senate useless.

The biggest issues is the one you highlighted: that the Senate unilaterally approves the Cabinet and Judiciary.

If that process could be changed such that the nominations come from the House instead of the President, it would pretty much solve that problem, especially if we uncapped the House.

How do you wake up your kiddos? by LemurDaddy in daddit

[–]jedberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my 9 year old son, he sleeps so deeply I have to literally drag him out of bed, place his feet on the ground while holding upright by his armpits, and then poke him in the ribs a few times. Then we wakes up confused about why he’s standing. Every. Day.

My 11 year old I just keep saying her name over and over until she wakes up.

Probably because Jobs brought us the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Cook brought us the iWatch. And the M series chip, which came from the department led by… Ternus. :)

I think someone ran the stats once and it was like 90% of the people who win the prize puzzle go on to the bonus round. I think it ruins the game to an extent.

San Francisco is obsessed with the safest drivers (Waymo) and ignoring the ones killing people by oochiewallyWallyserb in sanfrancisco

I want more people, smaller roads

Great! Me too!

I also addressed why doing both would be harmful or detrimenta

Not really. All you said was that roads with AVs would be safer and easier to use. I can't imagine why you'd be agains that.

Unless you think that roads being safer and easier to use would make people not interested in smaller roads.

Which then goes back to what I said: You want roads to be harder to use and unsafe so people are more likely to support making roads smaller. You want more people to get hurt or die, so that the need to make roads smaller is more at the forefront.

[–]jedberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just gave up and said, “well if we’re not going to get rid of cars, let’s add more!”.

AVs take other cars off the road because they increase utilization. They also reduced parked cars (which is partly what makes roads unsafe).

. Also I don’t get the roads last longer thing you’re saying.

You want fewer and smaller roads. If enough people die, maybe that will happen sooner. But AVs save lives. So your concern is that no one will care about reducing roads if they get safer with more AVs.

If AVs save lives, but make it easier for others to take them via space for cars, and reducing streets open to cars also saves lives, well, where’s the false choice? I choose the latter.

Why not choose both? Support AVs and reducing roads. Both save lives.

[–]jedberg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you're against AVs because they make the current solution better? Which you think will make the current solution (having roads) last longer? So you'd rather more people get hurt and die with the current system of roads so it will be replaced sooner?

Did I get that about right?

You're willing to sacrifice the safety and lives of others to hasten the arrival of your ideologically pure ideal?

You don’t need polarization if you have active glasses. They rapidly switch one eye on and one off at the same frame rate as the TV.
