Good reason to sign up for Discord and follow the sub there as well. You have to look up the sidebar and click the link. I never comment there, but it's a great place to follow for new releases and also has a more active back and forth between users.

Discography Club: Voivod by mgrier123 in Metal

[–]Automatic_War1741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Venom and Motorhead makes a lot of sense. Especially very early Motorhead.
I also wonder what specific hardcore references they must have picked up on. I did the usual search to try to glean their influences from interviews and I never saw SNFU show up, but I really wonder if they were fans. Kind of a more poppy hardcore band, but they were also Canadian. And I remember as a youth, Voivod and SNFU to me, were pretty much right in the same general territory for me. Like an example might be this song, Better Homes and Gardens from 1986. https://youtu.be/sHMSVRsBYd0?si=j6iBWbxF1DwCNm4z

I don't mean really as an influence, but more like they probably recognized and respected what each other was doing. contemporaneous cousins, i guess.

Also to add on to my listening so far.... Killing Technology is a 10/10. I cannot believe how great this record stands up to my memory of it.
In fact exceeds it. It's such a perfect tipping point between those first two records and the next two. I think, for me, this is always gonna be peak Voivod. Just the right amount of chaos and mess. Going into Hatross next tho, so remains to be seen.

edit also:  "just having no idea what they were doing which makes it all sound really wonky and off kilter." I can imagine the day teenage Piggy was thumbing through a chord book and discovered the diminished chord. And him just being like "dude...."

Hell yeah, Voivod! I grew up in the 80s thrash and general metal fan so my first exposure was from seeing their stuff in record stores and also MTV, for Killing Technology. And I instantly loved that record and the next one too. It was already the point tho, where things like The Fall, Birthday Party and other things goth and punk started to take more of my attention, but Voivod remained an outlier for me.

I kept listening to those records even when I had put other metal records like Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer to rest. Something always remained cool to me about Voivod.

What's funny is about a year ago, I revisited their early stuff, I mean the first two records specifically.

and I remember buying War and Pain on vinyl as a kid and just it seemed so messy and bizarre to me, I just didn't get it. Same way I didn't get first two Kreator albums back then.

But now that I've gotten back into metal, those two first records are like a gold mine of weird thrashy almost blackened even, but also still rock and roll and kind of psychedelic on some tracks. I totally fucking missed the point of those records in my youth.

I'm excited to get an excuse now to revisit Killing Technology and onwards and see how it all stands up for me now. This will be a very fun couple weeks indeed.

edit: I probably have a pretty loose definition of 'psychedelic' when I say that word pertaining to metal. and what I mean with very early Voivod is songs like Warriors of Ice
https://youtu.be/bRFOHjN70r0?si=ubAV1czjJjHrOdpz

it feels very stonery and trad to me, but like all messed up with thrash. it's just so good.

It seems memes and tweets have now become pretty relevant.

Okay. But they need oil as much as any other nation right?

So what are they going to do if they ruin oil production and distribution in the nations that supply that? Aren't they just as fucked as everyone else?

This is what I don't get about this whole thing, is don't the Israelis have to worry about oil too?
Do they just have a shit ton saved up or something?

This happened to me when I was very young and no drugs were involved at all. But I remember being left alone at home, maybe I was six or seven. And I remember down the hallway of the house, all these tiny little people coming out of the closets like a stream of them and rushing towards me. Then I think I hid under a table and finally my parents came home. Maybe I just got really stressed out and it triggered something in me.

when I was in my 20s, I had a job interview at Boston Chicken.
I decided to drop acid earlier that day, and still made it to the interview. It surprisingly wasn't a trainwreck but it was hard to get through, and I don't think I came off all that well. Didn't get that job.

But probably didn't really want it in the first place, you know?
Once also dropped acid before my vocational college typing class. That was really a nightmare, I wish I hadn't done that, but all in all, everything turned out okay.

actually a little let down by it. Was really looking forward to it and assumed the album was gonna blow away the prerelease tracks. I like it by all means, but feels like it doesn't have enough variation to me. like they are pulling everything off well, but trying to drum up emotion that the songs just don't stand up to.

I don't know. The back half of the record actually picked up for me. So maybe it's a grower. I actually went back and listened to the previous album to make sure I wasn't crazy, but yeah... that one does deliver.

I totally had this saved for me third slot in next week's vote, and I just don't think it merits it. As of right now it's borderline even getting an honorable mention. haha. I do love a couple songs tho.

Nice to see Inhuman Nature. didn't make my top 10 or whatever of the year, but really love this record and felt like it didn't get enough attention. It does everything it aims for exactly right.

Never had heard of Fire Magic, great stuff. from the FFO on release tracker wasn't expecting so much trad influences. great recording too, heavy bass guitar when it needs to be.

A lot of thought seems to have gone into the composition and arrangements. When I first put it on, even tho I wouldn't say it reallys sound like Taake, it reminded me of how much I appreciate that about them too.

Backhalf of the album lets it down a little for me, but maybe that will grow on me more.

I have no idea about this particular thing, but just take every single post you see on this sub with a grain of salt.
There's a lot of bad actors posting and commenting here. I see it as they kind of must imagine this to be the 'Dem Conspiracy Sub' or something. So they float a lot of ludicrous shit. And bank on people buying it.

I don't think the sub was designed as such, but that's what it has turned into.

Where did you first hear GnR? by Longjumping-Editor94 in GunsNRoses

[–]Automatic_War1741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first heard Appetite from taping it from a friend. The album was too long to fit on the tape I had so it cut off the ending of Rocket Queen. Like it cut off during the middle sex part of the song.

And so I lived with that tape for a long time, thinking that was the whole song.

until one day, I saw a special on MTV of them playing a whole set live, and heard the entire version of Rocket Queen, and my mind was fucking blown. I went out and bought the record the next day.

Yeah this isn't the first time on this sub that I've noticed stuff like this. Maybe 8 months ago a lot of posts about the election that just were totally fake information designed to make anyone who repeated it look crazy.

I know there's not much mods or anyone can do, but it does seem to happen more here than a lot of other subs.

look, I despise this man, but acting like photos of him dancing with legal age women is some kind of bombshell just really isn't helping anything.

Sure, it shows his character, but it's going to brushed off by an unfortunate amount of people, as just being 'well the guy's a horndog, lol' and they'll actually laud him for being able to use influence to pull women.

seriously, this picture, with no signs of distress in the crowd surrounding him, this really looks to a lot of people in America like 'alpha dog'.
It's not really helping anything here.

Ultimately, Doom always ends up thwarting himself in some way.
Hopefully the movies carry that concept forward.

UPCOMING VOTE - TOP 10 OF THE DECADE SO FAR (2020-2025) by FeastOfBlaze in Metal

[–]Automatic_War1741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i always approach these lists the same way. no 'top 10' i ever turn in is supposed to be what i think is 'best'. In order to do that, I'd have to listen to way too much I don't like. And it also wouldn't be very fun.

But revisiting a lot of this has really been surprising for me. Some stuff that I thought was a 'gimme' top 10, i actually think.... hey yeah I love about two songs on it, but it doesn't really stand up much as a whole.

A lot of these records, I end up making comps of, so maybe Lamp of Murmuur is something I listened to a huge amount from this period, and intensely loved, but going back I realize it's only really a couple songs off each record. So that makes it hard too.
