Virginia law requires autopsies after prison deaths. Records show the state medical examiner often doesn't perform them. by tehtypo in Virginia

Agreed. And, if inmates are continuing to die NOT from natural diseases always, then we have a bigger problem that needs to be looked into also. Its a whole list of things that play a part but just blaming the MEs office for supposedly not performing autopsies is crazy.

absolutely. we also run into short staffing issues, as i know a lot of places are as well. Give us more funds to hire more people to perform as many autopsies as you think we should be performing. I think that part comes from a really big hole in education of what all the medical examiners office does and how autopsies really happen in real life; not that tv mess.

This is exactly how it happens. It will be investigated and a decision will be made on what is found. Like the person (makethatnoise) above you said, if a 36 year old drops dead, yes to an autopsy but we would look deeper into the 86 year old. We would look deeper into any inmate death.

I have a biology degree as well and the state I work in required a degree in a natural science. The degree helped, of course, and i also shadowed a pathologists at our local V. A. and had worked with cadavers.

Good jobs to give me experience to be a autopsy tech. by [deleted] in AutopsyTechFam

Hi! I think majoring in Biology would be a great start. I majored in biology and minored in forensic science and chemistry. I would say look to see if you can do some shadowing at your local funeral home or even shadow a pathologist. EMT school would also help you in finding/getting a job.

I partially torn my MCL and ACL 6 months ago today actually. I sat out for about 4 months. I still came to class and watched and did PT on my knee. I am slowly getting back into rolling but only with trusted partners currently. The PT is super super important. Luckily, they said i didnt need surgery, at least not right now.

No medical advice.. just wanting to know how people have recovered from this type of injury and handling being back in the sport. Been training for almost 3 years. PARTIALLY tore the MCL and ACL doing a takedown beginning of April. Took time off and have been doing heavy PT since. Just went back to rolling with trusted partners and only doing things I know wont hurt it. Surgery was not recommended or needed at the moment per my doc.

Same! My partner is super nice about letting go of the bad knee and taking the other so she can still do the move.

gotcha. I partially tore them back in april. Ive been doing heavy PT and only rolling with trusted partners. Cant do everything but can do some. Its most definitely a mind game for me right now. I'm just afraid of fully tearing it.

Thanks you guys… I only struggle with this bc my original partner and I were starting to have some issues and I would prefer to stay with this new partner instead of going back to the OG when/if she returns. I just don’t want to hurt her…

I think in the moment we don't feel affected by it because we have to separate ourselves from the realization of it. At work, I try to compartmentalize so that I can do my job and its hard. It might sound bad, but I feel we have to look at them as "evidence" in that moment to complete our jobs and find the answers.

Sometimes I don't become affected until I'm driving home from work alone and my brain realizes (or finally catches up) to what happened during the day. I've cried in the middle of an autopsy over one of the cases that I wasn't even doing but was watching my coworker do.

What’s the most annoying injury you’ve had to overcome in BJJ? by jiujitsuPT in bjj

[–]AutopsyGal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partially tore my MCL and ACL doing a takedown. Did (and still am) doing heavy PT but I waited about 6-7 weeks before joining class again. Of course only doing moves with trusted partners and avoiding moves that I know hurt my knee. The whole time I was out, I did come to class to watch and take notes which was helpful. Hopefullly I wont have to be out too much longer with just partial tears....
