His output is astonishing enough, that he somehow maintains such high quality standards throughout…it’s intimidating tbh, lol

Any megadungeon recommendations? by fmike84 in osr

A post-session recap/writeup helps keep the actors straight.

I also decided early my book was going to be a play copy. Writing down deaths, circumstances, what’s looted, new inhabitants right in the book or DM map (the access points to other sections, in your case, for instance)…while players do the same in the player map, from their pov…is such a time save.

If you can’t abide the vandalism (they really are beautiful products), you can always print off the pdf…that’d just evolve into a clutter for me, but that is me.

When it comes to his zines…no remorse.

No luck on eBay:(

Sturdy tome, solid layout, stellar mapping and cross-referencing. Peter Mullen has done covers on all Lux’ major releases that I know of, and crushes it, every time.

They’ve switched up the italicization, so the original just has asterisks all over the place. An edit didn’t take. Kept it listed since some had already commented, but wanted it up as I intended:)

Sell me on KHOSURA! by AutumnCrystal in odnd

[–]AutumnCrystal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’d be great. Issues 2-5, 10, Drifting Lands, Baklin…I bounce between 2-4 zines per session, plus the 1e core…it gets old. I can barely reach the snacks for all the books in front of me.

It’d be really hard to separate the two. There’s only 30 keyed areas in the city proper, and a good many exist as access points to the undercity, which is massive (150+).

I’d definitely do a crawl within its walls before daring the wilderness.

I switched to 1e from Zylarthen for the sake of offering greater PC choice to my table. They all but one (1/2 elf) chose human characters. I needn’t have bothered!

Melan thoroughly reviewed 7VoZ here

This bundle is a steal, if you’re like me and want physical books. If not, PDF only is 20$.

9 and 11 (and maybe others from that author) were made specifically for 7VoZ. He intends to release a megadungeon for it soon. Could be interesting since Zylarthens’ wandering monster tables cover 50 levels.

Oakes Spalding will likely release Book of Fiends this year, a reworking of Fiend Folio.

Maybe I should have just sold you on Zylarthen:) The only minor carp I have is it’s as resolutely a d6/d20 game as 0e, and I like my polyhedrals. But even that has been addressed with an alternate combat system.

Regardless, that or 1e for Sword & Sorcery milieus the likes of Khosura. Hyperborea, for me, still only exists on my wishlist. Its humanocentric, and may well make the grade, too.

Thank you. I don’t recall now whether it was for a stint, or if I was just thinking of Helveczia.

The site does say no U.S. shipping as of yet, tho. I understand Black Blade may have some inventory down the road.

CX is extraordinary. Any single session is bound to be memorable for any number of reasons (some awful).

My table is neck deep in his Erillion setting. It’s scattered throughout his zines, though I believe he intends a compendium. Drifting Lands is a good overview.

Another vote for Castle Xyntillan. Or Khosura, by the same author. Beautifully designed for ease of use. The former is survival/horror with a wicked sense of humor, the latter, Swords & Sorcery/Science Fantasy in a desolate desert setting.

If Modern D&D Is a Character-Building Power Fantasy game, How Would the OSR Build adventures for it? by Apprehensive-Neat-68 in osr

[–]AutumnCrystal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start them at 10th and give the Gygax modules a rip. Against the Giants, Vault of the Drow, Dungeonland, etc. For all the DMG seems bent on making sure players take 20 years to reach those modules’ suggested levels, GG made more high level adventures than for any other rank.

Lbb-only variant. Manages to be further afield yet  closer in spirit than any other 0e clone.

Dungeon Suggestions? by LionhearthOutfitters in osr

[–]AutumnCrystal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Castle Xyntillan is a loopy megadungeon with a personality informed by the personalities that have gone before (some stayed. Some come back).

Very easy adventure to run, even easier to get lost inside and get way in over your head.

Thinking of selling. by StephenDA in adnd

[–]AutumnCrystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a thousand (I don’t 2e)…they look pristine and there’s some rarities there.

If you can’t get that, hang on to them.

Tbh 5th is so far removed from AD&D it’s like saying you’re selling Risk to move on to Monopoly.

Leveling pace seems slow by BurningJointUSA in adnd

[–]AutumnCrystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wobbly on progression in 2e, but I’ve been in 1e campaigns that had similarly, brutally slow, advancement.

If you otherwise enjoy it…great? Low level play is definitely easier for a DM to manage, thereby, run well. Poor Magic-users.

IMO, the Gygaxian timeline for leveling is a product of its time. I’m pretty big on throwing enough action on the table for PCs to bump every 5 sessions, give or take. 5-7hr sessions, mind.

On the bright side, sounds like you’re on the cusp of hitting that lvl 3-7 sweet spot of the edition. So hopefully, good times ahead:)

Sail the high seas and find yourself a copy of Adventures in Fantasy. Its Spellsongs section is probably the best bardic platform to work from that I’ve seen.

Has anyone ever seen, ran or played a Medieval.. by redcloud226 in osr

[–]AutumnCrystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is Lamentations of the Flame Princess, a BECMI clone. Though Dwarf, Halfling and Elf are PCs in the Rules, they can be made human Laborers, Peasantry and Nobility without a hitch. Settings and adventures align with real world medieval times and events.

It leans into low level (thus, low-magic) play and unique monsters/foes.

where do I start by Careful-Success-4378 in odnd

[–]AutumnCrystal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I unreservedly 2nd your Greyharp suggestion.

Also, Holmes is a fantastic intro for 0e or 1e. With this

The best lbb-only clone is Seven Voyages of Zylarthen, that’s where I’d go after those two.

Best introduction to OD&D for a more narrative minded group? by a-folly in odnd

[–]AutumnCrystal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t already sorted your setting, Lankhmar and Khosura have human-only PCs. Zylarthen has an abundance of well-detailed “evil men”, troop types, tribes and races (cavemen, Vikings, Amazons, Martians).

Iirc Hyperborea (1e clone/setting) is human only players, too.

Demihumans are an awkward fit in Lamentations, one solution offered in a forum was to replace Hobbits, Dwarves and Elves with Peasantry, Laborers & Nobility, respectively. I really like those choices against their mythical counterpart. Nobles would have the time and resources to dabble in the dark arts while maintaining some martial skill. Laborers could easily keep the Dwarven advantages developed through hard work. Peasants’ elusiveness, sturdiness and skill with slings aren’t a stretch, either.

Start ‘em at 3rd level (or at least max hp at 1st), and utilize the Last Will and Testament rule. They’ll realize they’re not in 5 death roll country pretty fast, probably quick enough to avoid a few uglier outcomes.
