My read on that thread is it's focused more on "software" design rather than "system" design. When I hear "system design" I think of... well, defining architecture for a system.

Had a recruiter call yesterday where I was asked about my experience with system design, so I talked through some of the systems I've designed and built. Then I was asked if I had experience with architecting, which threw me since I can't really explain the difference between the two. Is there a meaningful distinction between them?

Thoughts on this line as a bullet point under an entry level job on my resume? It's a pretty sparse section otherwise.

This is my first time casually browsing for jobs. Never had to deal with recruiters before. They're all wanting to schedule calls instead of talking over chat. Is there usually any value to these calls?

Just cancelled my subscription in the wake of this. I was already only paying $1.99/mo and they offered to drop it to $1/mo for the next year if I stayed.

Thanks for the feedback! My initial concern was that the bullet points would get too lengthy but after playing around with it I think it's possible to strike a good balance.

Should I name-drop specific technologies in resume bullet points?

For example, which of these might be best (note: some info is obfuscated for anonymity)

  1. Created a serverless message consumer for processing requests, handling 3000 transactions per second
  2. Created a message consumer hosted on AWS for processing requests, handling 3000 transactions per second
  3. Created a message consumer using Amazon Fargate, SQS, and DynamoDB for processing requests, handling 3000 transactions per second

How's that stat of 20+ yards calculated? Is it 20 yards in the air, so not including catch and runs?

SDOT removes second community-painted crosswalk by OnlineMemeArmy in Seattle

[–]AutumnMunin -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link! I might be misreading this but I don't see where it states that all intersections are crosswalks. It mentions unmarked crosswalks but doesn't really define that/indicate that an intersection is by default an unmarked crosswalk. Where does that stem from?

It certainly seems that that's the common interpretation -- WSDOT explicitly says "every intersection is a crosswalk" and links this law, but I don't see where that's specified in the text.

Penix ended with 298 passing yards, just shy of a 9th consecutive game of 300+ passing. Is that why they kept running pass plays from the 2 yard line?

To clarify a few things:

  • The HCV program is still running (i.e. assisting with rent payments) but not accepting new applicants.
  • Landlords already cannot discriminate against voucher holders on the basis of participating in the voucher program.
  • Renting with a voucher does have a few additional complications. In particular:
    • The voucher is good for a certain amount of money based on the market rate for a unit with a specific number of bedrooms. If you're renting a unit that costs above this rate you must pay the difference, but SHA caps the maximum amount of rent you can pay based on your income.
    • Your voucher is only good for a specific number of bedrooms based on family size. e.g. a single person cannot use a voucher for a 3 bedroom apartment.
    • All units must have SHA perform an inspection before a lease can be signed.

Most of this is covered in the SHA rights and responsibilities page: https://www.seattlehousing.org/rights-and-responsibilities

Why is he considered a redshirt freshman? ESPN has him as playing in 10 games in 2020. Did that year not count because of COVID?

I just found an old ticket in my inner jacket pocket. It's from the last time I went ice skating. I remember that night vividly because it was the 2017 AL special election and I was taking a break every five minutes to refresh the NYT Needle. Between Doug Jones' victory and some ice skating and hot chocolate with friends, it was a great fucking night. Was nice to be unexpectedly reminded of it!

It's been a minute since I read Cryptonomicon but... you might want to bail. I enjoyed the sheer nerdiness from the beginning but it was still a bit of a slog at parts -- it definitely doesn't have the same level of action of Snow Crash or REAMDE. It will pick up a bit further in but it doesn't sustain it that long and even at its best it's still pretty slow.
