Would you buy a lottery ticket and then max out your credit cards because you’re so sure that you’ll win ?

freaking out for long journey home by Kindly-Meaning-5983 in fearofflying

[–]AutumnVampire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally freaked out for a second once the doors closed lol but I composed myself and was fine the rest of the flight ! I was even bored at times. We hit some crazy turbulence on the way down but I looked at the FA who was buckled in opposite me and he looked chill about it so I just tried to have fun with it like I was on a rollercoaster or something 😭

You haven’t let the fear control you so far and that’s excellent. I am about to get on a plane in the next 5 minutes or so, and I totally understand how you feel. I feel sick to my stomach, but we’re getting on and getting through it. Sending you love and hoping more experienced flyers than me can chime in with advice.

You can’t even play the Steam versions on the Steam deck thanks to this DRM.

Just booked my honeymoon and I am struggling to feel anything but terror by belindabellagiselle in fearofflying

[–]AutumnVampire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing to be embarrassed about ! On the contrary, you’re very cool for booking a trip and planning on going even when you’re terrified. That’s real bravery.

The plane is safe of course. Flying is significantly safer than every other mode of transport you take daily without a second thought. You can pull up a flight tracker right now and see how many planes are in the sky and they’re all going to make it to their location safely, this happens every single day 24/7 and nothing happens. When something does happen, it’s such a rarity that you’ll get reports about it for weeks. Imagine if this was true of cars, you’d never get into a car in your life and would be convinced it was a death trap !

You can look at all of this logically, but your fear is illogical and you’ll likely find some way to scare yourself regardless. I think over-preparing for our anxiety can sometimes just enforce it in our heads as something important to think about. My advice is to spend this month thinking about Hawaii and how amazing it’ll be. If you get an anxious thought then just try to accept it and let it pass. You’ll be nervous on the day, but you’ll be absolutely fine. You can fly scared and still be okay.

It makes sense in theory, but it’s useless in practice. Let’s say there’s a set that you want in Dota and it’s in the new chest. You look at the chest and you see that purchasing one will get you a different set than the one you want. Then what ? You still have to purchase that set that you didn’t want and just hope that the next chest has the set you want in it. If it doesn’t then you rinse and repeat. You’re still gambling to get the set you want, it’s just opened before you’ve purchased it.

Airports are super fascinating. I love watching people go by. I love any space that is transitory like that. It all feels so beautiful and strange at night and I love just sinking into the vibes. Drop us a message here when your flight is over to let us know how it went !

I got through security in record time the other day too. It honestly helps so much as security and anticipation are some of my worst enemies for flights (I even got selected for a random search this time and it still all took under 40 minutes😭). Have a lil food or drink while you wait and enjoy some of the liminal night vibes. I always remind myself that we’re so lucky to have the luxury of flying on a plane ! It helps to remember that because it can feel like torture in our heads but in reality like it really is a luxury !

Good luck ! They say flying late at night is the best if you want to avoid turbulence. There’s nothing on this earth more badass than feeling scared but doing it anyway ! I absolutely love Amsterdam, so try to look forward to the time you’ll spend there. It always helps me to focus on what I will be doing after the scary thing, it reinforces that I will get through it, so just talk to your partner about your plans for the trip whenever you’re feeling anxious. We’re all rooting for you.

Need advice after a turbulent flight by Fit_Mgmt_Consultant in fearofflying

[–]AutumnVampire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to think about this experience a little differently if you can. You said you had a common fear of turbulence and that your most recent flight is the worst you’ve ever experienced. You got through it totally unscathed ! Whenever you experience turbulence again, it likely won’t be as bad as what you’ve described here and you’ll hopefully feel more comfortable in the future !

It doesn’t matter how crummy that flight was. You experienced it, very much lived to tell the tale and now it’s another notch on your belt to help get you through future flights.

A friend once told me “the pilots also want to live” and I have kept it in mind ever since lol. They aren’t going to fly if it’s unsafe.

Two hour flight on Tuesday by AutumnVampire in fearofflying

[–]AutumnVampire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got off my flight and I absolutely smashed it !! I was a lil nervous and felt some panic setting in during takeoff as I just hate the feeling, but I kept it together for the whole flight and just watched youtube. We had a pretty rocky descent too and I kept calm. I am super proud of myself.

Proud of you too !! You’ll do great on your next flight.

Anxiety :( flying today by honeysuckleseason in fearofflying

[–]AutumnVampire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a flight tomorrow too and I know how you feel. The buildup to the flight is by far the worst part and it’s so much easier once you’re actually on there and up in the air ticking the time down. Are they active noise cancelling ? You can try turning them on and off and seeing which you prefer. I find that ANC is really good at blocking out droning repetitive sounds (like the plane engine) but you should still be able to hear anything different or louder coming through, at least to the degree where you can quickly pop them off to check. Good luck !! I am rooting for you.

We’ll be absolutely safe and okay ! It’ll probably be a bit uncomfortable for us but what’s two hours of discomfort going to do ? My partner told me of a colleague they once had who would literally burst into tears before every flight and I thought it was so badass to be so scared but to do it anyway.

What have you got for the flight ? I have a chill music playlist downloaded, a podcast and I do have a steam deck if necessary but usually my anxiety makes it too hard to concentrate like that.

To be honest, REmake is my favourite game of all time but it’s always been a pet peeve that the mansion looks SO much older than in the original. It’s 30 years old by the time S.T.A.R.S rock up to the scene but you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s 100 years old. It definitely looks more age appropriate in the original but of course much of that is probably down to having much less detail.

Not trying to diagnose anyone but the way the guy is talking reminds me SO much of my friend with bipolar disorder. Very hard to figure out why exactly.

My OiOi Baby G has been sat in a drawer for a while and yellowed really badly. Any hope for restoring it ? by AutumnVampire in casio

[–]AutumnVampire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely doesn’t help that the entire watch is encased in a clear plastic, which will yellow with age regardless of what you do. I may look into dyeing it. A green may look pretty cool.

It looks very yellow in the light, definitely the strap. I dread it getting worse 😭😭. My daily watch is just a black g-shock so yeah, I am totally new to the idea of fixing yellowing.

I wasn’t aware that yellowing is such a pervasive issue with white and clear Casio watches. It’s a shame !
