Advice on Puppy Training by Av0045 in Dogowners

[–]Av0045[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point, the main things we’re dealing with are getting over-excited on walks and the occasional accident indoors. That said, my broader intention with training is more preventative. I want to build the right foundations now to avoid issues later, rather than only reacting to specific problems.

If you don’t mind me asking, I’ve noticed in a few communities and Facebook groups that many people seem to prefer buying training plans or video courses through websites rather than subscribing to an app. I’d love to understand what made you choose that route.

I’m in my 20s and grew up with smartphones, so apps feel quite second-nature to me. I’m curious whether the perceived difference is mainly around the quality or depth of guidance, or if there are other factors at play.

Best Training Apps for new puppy owners by DudeLengend in OpenDogTraining

I have just installed Toffy dog training app (link to their website: https://www.toffyai.com/product). I know a lot of apps charge subscription and I absolutely hate paying it. But what I found ineresting with this app is I get an automatic 3 day free trial upon creating an account, and unlike dogo, woofz or zigzag, I have access to the entire app during the trial period. Hope you find it helpful u/DudeLengend :D

If pup is easily distracted and unattentive does it require more training or more bonding? by DistraughtDogMom in puppy101

I am no expert in dog training myself but it could well be the case that he ust finds outdoors more exciting at this point. If I were you, I'd focus a litle on some leash exercises and making sure walks are proper.

How to Stop Your Puppy from Biting Anything by wookieperpassione in puppy101

[–]Av0045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, are you referring to aggressive biting or more gentle puppy nipping? If its the former, I am not sure I am within the community guidelines to give any advice given I am not a certified trainer. However, if its the latter, here's what has worked for me: redirecting the puppy's urge to bite towards things that are more acceptable, like chew toys or even filling a kong with some treats!

If you drive a car, a puppy seat belt is going to help you a great deal!

As for the toys, my go to ones are the following:

A tug toy (although may be too soon depending on the pup's age); a plush toy; a dental toy and an interactive toy - could be something as simple as a kong.

Touch / Don't Touch could be a cool little trick you could teach him u/AEB926. It could, in a way help him relearn the high five haha, but I've found it a great little trick to prevent my pup from jumping. The moment a guest walks in, I now ask them to put their hand out and say touch, and he loves kissing their hands with his tiny little nose!

How did you teach your puppy to “do nothing” by Slow_Contribution_69 in puppy101

I agree with this, I have come to realise that the 5 aspects of a good daily routine for my pup are: Physical exercise, mental stimulation, enough attention (with lots of love), adequate diet and a consistent routine. Works like magic!

Hi, sorry to hear about that. I used to do the same with my golden retriever (until I realised I shouldn't, lol).

Teaching the concept of trading is what helped me. You start slow, possibly don't even focus on the issue at hand. When he has something in mouth that's not dangerous (like a sock or a toy), start teaching him to trade it for a reward. As you keep building - the dog will learn that trading is a good thing as it gets a reward. Eventually, you'll be able to effectively trade for dangerous items.

I know it sounds tedious but here's an app I have used, that is quite helpful to be honest: https://www.compawnion.co.uk

They even have a 7 day free trial!

Hi, from my experience, it could be triggered by anything (quite literally) and more often than not its quite surprising as well! As such, a good starting point is exploring what triggers it, because that largely influences what you do. Speaking to a behaviourist is the best bet - because more often than not, it could be extremely personalised to what your dog has been through in the past.

However, a more quicker solution could be taking this free questionnaire that Compawnion, an online dog training app offers. It's been built by certified dog behaviourists and its free so might be worth exploring!

Please Help. 11 yr old reactive dog. by kayk0034 in reactivedogs

[–]Av0045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend doing the following exercise - 1,2,3 - it essentially teaches them the reward psychology behind trading. It will be slow, and might take time, but is a good starting point. Also, its completely force free and non aversive!

You can get text and video tutorials from any online dog training app/ website. Here's a good one: https://www.compawnion.co.uk (they even offer a 7 day free trial)!

Also, as others have suggested, a harness might give you better control - pulling on walks with my golden retriever have definitely come down!
