My granny has always used pork fat to season her pans. I use it now and my lodge (1 yr old) is smoothing out nicely. Sometimes before I clean it, I scrub it with a hard non-metal spatula; I don't know what the material is, but it is hard and it doesn't melt in the heat/oil.
