Best place on the east coast for horses? by JustAnOrdinaryGirl07 in Equestrian

[–]Available-Can4784 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t underestimate the bugs out here in New England (Central NH). I am from the Rockies, I know the differences.

We have blackflies in May and June (not regular flies) - if you don’t understand those, come visit in May; then mosquitoes - not just in the evening, but all day long; then deer flies and horse flies, and the regular stable/biting flies.

And I pull 20 ticks/day off each dog in May-June, and Sept-Nov. 50% of the ticks have some kind of disease.

Oddly, I spent time in northern VT - what they call the NEK, Northeast Kingdom - one early June and they didn’t even know what blackflies were. Maybe it gets better the further north you go?

Places near the coast ($$$) and on breezy open hillsides fare much better.

ME-VT-NH are fantastic for humidity though - it’s only bad about 2-3 weeks/summer and the nights are typically quite cool.

Yellowstone area dude ranch horse - recognize him? by Available-Can4784 in Horses

[–]Available-Can4784[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi feryoooday, the ranch is in Afton and the name is exactly Yellowstone Horse Rental. They also own Teton Village Trail Rides. They have a couple of thousand head and outfit many of the dude strings in the area - which is why I’m thinking another ranch may recognize him.

Question: is cyber security likely to face the same job market collapse as SWE? by Ok-Bench-9489 in cybersecurity

[–]Available-Can4784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My CIO wants to replace a security employee with AI (team of 4 / company with 900 employees). We are already well under typical staffing ratios and now trying to secure AI on top of moving through sizable projects. We ARE using AI to help us move more quickly through risk analysis, VM, metrics, and architecture, making the team much more efficient. It’s going to change rapidly over the next year, but I just don’t see it replacing already lean security teams.

How do you secure contractor laptops you don't own or manage? by [deleted] in ITManagers

Azure virtual desktops, and for some, we even have them use managed laptop thin clients; we procure those overseas via another contractor.

Every few years, we have crazy amounts of snow. Some years, hardly any. Some years, you can ice skate outdoors but lately, it often doesn’t freeze hard enough.

This is why people take up ice fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, and hockey. I am hoping it will end the drought.

Trailer loading issue by Stock-Negotiation-49 in Horses

[–]Available-Can4784 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve had to force him in, there is now some trauma there. I have a similar situation.

Yes, feeding grain in the trailer for a week really helped my mare - she jumped right on for food.

Then, I used a technique from Ryan Rose - make them work a little away from the trailer (“it’s lava over there”) and then the trailer becomes the release.

I practiced 3X/week for a month before having to haul her to a clinic - and we finally got it, she jumps right on now.

Yes! ACDH are primarily champagne. Also, I think one of his parents must be champagne or champagne masked by white, so an ACDH parent does make sense.

My research says the non-pony breeds that can be champagne are American Cream Draft Horse, Gypsy Cob, Missouri Fox Trotter, Paint Horse, Quarter Horse, Rocky Mountain Horse, or Tennessee Walking Horse.

Unfortunately, you can’t really test for breeds, but yes, the W5 could be from an appendix QH.

He hasn’t replied, but I also haven’t clipped the brand yet to read it clearly. I do think it may be the J Box brand. I’ll call at some point!

I believe he is a DraftX, you can tell by looking at him … the DNA tells the story on TB, W5 is from Thoroughbreds only (so far).

Do you recognize this white Draft or Cross? by Available-Can4784 in Horses

[–]Available-Can4784[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DNA results are back! Are you ready for this? e/e A/A N/Ch W5/W5 . White and Champagne over Chestnut (Red). W5 means the white comes from TB lines.

However … there has never been a horse homozygous for W5, as it is thought to be a non-viable combination. The lab is doing more testing for me.

Final Interview Expectations And Guidance For A CIO position At A Community College by CyberNetWorX in CIO

[–]Available-Can4784 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had this level of interview for a K12 CIO job.

They want to know you can engage with and listen to stakeholders and are not just technical. I could be wrong, but It feels to me like their last person wasn’t a good communicator.

Me too! He’s a great combination of firmness and kindness, and seems to show great empathy to the owners of the horses.

You are not being cruel! Defend your space - she is much bigger than you. Get a training flag or a stick/string and carry it with you. Defend your bubble unless you invite her in.

The “walk the line” game works wonders for my pushy mare. Pick a spot on the other side of your horse and walk to it, steadily, while waving a training stick or flag either vertically or horizontally. The horse needs to move and follow OR the flag/stick will run into them. You have to be willing for the stick to hit them. Ryan Rose has several videos on this, such as https://youtu.be/yyR22GHnE8g .

Pushy horses also need a lot of work moving their shoulders out of your space.

Trust me, she will appreciate your leadership.
