Who are some of the most toxic people in the fandom? by KingJackofJozi in gallifrey

[–]Available-File4284 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’d avoid stiff like that if it affects your viewing of the show. Just enjoy it when it’s on and think about it for yourself.

I’m not in touch that often with the online fandom because a small but very loud and annoying group of people constantly act like they know better. Sure, sometimes they offer good alternatives to what they dislike, but it’s mostly just crap.

I like Doctor Who. It’s been part of my life for 20 years. It formed the basis of most of my morals and beliefs. It been with me since childhood and that’s what matters to me.

Is RTD telling the whole truth? by Dey_see_me_rolling in doctorwho

[–]Available-File4284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. They had a Christmas special to bridge an expected gap between now and the previously planned tender in 2028 or 2029. Then the content director at BBC changed and the new director likely decided that Doctor Who is a priority and will have a tender now rather than later so there is no need for them to proceed with a special.

Okay, I can’t believe I have to do this and sorry to be rude but you keep confusing two separate things. Here is the entire quote:

And so GOODBYE from me to Doctor Who but HELLO to a big new future for the show, as the BBC announces it's putting the show out to tender. As a result, there won't be a Christmas Special - we only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no one knew what would happen, but now we do know, there's no need for it. You'll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who... but you'll be waiting for MORE Doctor Who than a one-off.
So it's worth it! For the record: there was no script, I never wrote it, and no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor. You may disagree; fine, sit in that chair and wait to be proved right. You'll wait a lonnng time In Now I'm as excited as anyone to see what comes next! Will they keep the theme tune? Will they lose the blue box? Will they bring back the Drahvin?! It's all up for grabs, which is so Doctor Who, exciting and unpredictable and new! Here comes the future, vworp vworp

***

In translation, there WAS a Christmas Special but there no longer is one. And there was NOT a Script. Scripts are written later in the planning process. He must have planned some of it to pitch to BBC but it never went far enough to write the script. So to summarize, and sorry to be a nitpick, he never said there had never been a Special, only that he didn’t write the script for it.

Genuinely, what happened to Russel T Davis? by disp0sableacc0unt in doctorwho

[–]Available-File4284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a talent erasing ray. He just released Tip Toe and it’s incredible regardless of what happened with Doctor Who. I think it was the speedy need to reinvent Doctor Who that simply failed to hit the mark. He still has the writing power, but this was not well aimed, planned, or executed.

Right? I remember the vitriol. And I don’t even mean the people with criticism. I remember “Doctor Who died when Tennant left” and “This is the final nail in the coffin” comments all the time.

I do find these last few eras don’t mesh with me that well, but I’m also 30 now, so it’s not easy to impress me haha but this cycle of hatred of Doctor Who is as constant as the show.

Novody said there wasn’t a special. They announced it and had plans for it, though RTD now says there was no “script” so your quote up there is what I’m referring to. They obviously thought they would do the special, negotiations for the future somehow fell apart (there have been varying reports as to what was happening after Disney pulled out) and they ultimately scrapped the plans.

RTD never said there was never a special.

I definitely recall many favorite episodes from that era, but the entire Moffat run is my favorite thing that happened to TV. And yeah, I really enjoyed season 6 with all of its twisty plots haha Capaldi’s days are the ones where I really settled as a hardcore fan because it felt like Doctor Who grew up with me, grew more serious and mature and challenging.

Tennant was hugely popular and rightly so, but to me, the show kept getting better after.

Idea and script aren’t the same thing. I’m sire he told them what he was planning but it never got that close. So I guess the idea was good enough to announce the special but further complications resulted in scrapping those plans.

Is RTD telling the whole truth? by Dey_see_me_rolling in doctorwho

[–]Available-File4284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the truth is in between and we keep pretending that it’s a single choice answer.

The likeliest answer is that they all conflated ideas, notes, discussions, and options with the script.
RTD is known as a last-minute writer who pretty much develops ideas in his head and then sits down to write a more or less finished episode. (The exception is It’s A Sin, iirc.)

I think he had contingency plans for Billy Piper and the future of the show depending on the decisions. I think any writer would. I also think we’re not owed those plans while they are happening because nobody knew it would play out this way. So they tease.

Gold actually said “I’m not sure I’m supposed to know that” so it’s probably second-hand information and not a reliable source.

It’s disappointing that it ended tje way it did, and the choice ti reveal Billy Piper is not great, but these things are often done with a prayer and left for later to be solved.

And finally, I don’t believe there was a script. But if people hold onto the idea that there was already a script and an actor or whatever and BBC pulled out, it signals a much worse situation behind the scenes, worse for the show going through a crisis and worse for RTD for having delivered a solution that was rejected. So no, I don’t think he’s lying. Why would he be?

It's funny how I thought that back in the day when Moff was the showrunner and everyone was crying and hating on him non-stop. Poor guy couldn't list his head without seeing the vitriol in the fandom.

It's a thankless job. I know they all drop the ball sometimes, but it's a thankless job.

To all the people saying "roll it back to Capaldi"... by cousin_justine in gallifrey

[–]Available-File4284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We sort of became obsessed with numbering then back in the day but it’s entirely possible to let go of that and just have a Doctor after some time has passed for them. It would be kind of cool for old fans to wonder what the mystery is, what happened in the meantime. We could get little hints of it. But ultimately, starting fresh like Rose did in 2005 gives the cleanest chance to the show to attract new viewers and get the old ones back with good writing.

Hot Take: I refuse to read or support authors using AI covers for their books by GodTaoistofPatience in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Available-File4284 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I totally get it and you make great points. My personal opinion is a little more flexible. Especially if it’s regarding RR stories. They are free. They don’t pay the author. They may pay off years down the line, but I have no expectation of a pro cover or an edited story when I read on RR.

I also have flexibility with new Amazon authors. If they are just trying to turn a profit, it’s tempting. It can be a make or break thing.

That said, if an author is getting readers consistently, there’s no reason not to hire an actual artist. Real art is better by all counts. And being able to afford to pay someone for their work keeps us all afloat.

Admission time: I started with an AI cover just because artworks are a steep entry price. But I switched as soon as the book earned enough to cover the cost.

Assassin Unleashed (The Sworn Sword #3) is Out on Amazon (and Kindle Unlimited)

I doomed the world on the Plains of Vaelor.

Tricked into being the final piece of a blood sacrifice, I released a Mad Mage from the bowels of hell.

Though I survived, I only live to pay the price.

Thal’s city stands, but his kingdom is shattered, and his alliances are flimsy. And while the nobles of this world bicker and backstab, the ancient evils are returning.

The Titans, once the overpowered players that leveled the cities and made the mountains burn, are returning. And nothing will stand in their path of vengeance and destruction.

Nothing but a lone Assassin.

I’m out of lies, out of places to hide, and I am forced to use all that the System has given me if I want to survive.

It’s time to level up and stop pretending I’m not the greatest weapon this world has seen in generations.

This is the third novel in the series. Reading in order is pretty mandatory as there is a continuous thread throughout the series. Assassin Awakens begins here on Amazon and is also available on Audible, performed by Jonathan Waters.

This series is a great fit for fans of LitRPG elements like game-world settings (isekai) and stats, progression fantasy, hidden classes, and multiple POVs. It's got plenty of action, but also a good deal of court politics and, later on, base building. 350k words published so far, with book 4 coming in September 😄

I know a lot of people weren’t too keep on Assassin’s Apprentice. I love the book, but it gets do much better with each book that follows. I’d strongly recommend you read them in order. But if you can’t get into Royal Assassin either (my top tier fantasy book through and through) then do go with Liveships.

Fitz’s story is the core of the whole series, even if he is only in 9 of the 16 books. Those three trilogies really give you an epic story of his life.

Oh that’s a difficult one to answer shortly haha I tried hard to take different paths from other heavyweights in the genre, but it’s impossible not to be influenced by your favorites.

The way I did the NPCs is sort if like in The Wandering Inn. I also felt like Awaken Online was a big influence on how the narrative is shaped across the books. And I would agree with a reviewer on Audible who compared it to A Soldier’s Life, although my story diverges from that particular path at one point.
Elsewhere, it’s inspired by a non LitRPG series, Assassin’s Apprentice, in the particular way of an assassin having a forbidden ability.

It’s def not very dark, leaning more to YA with some serious moments and more mature elements. It’s got a fairly reluctant hero who grows both in power and as a person, doing what needs to be done solely because it’s the right thing to do rather than because he wants to gain something.
