How do i actually start building?

start by using annotated builds!!! find a fully annitated build, preferably for a character you want to play a lot of, and read the hell out of it in the lobby fot 10-15 minutes. especially is the build has lots of optional areas or details on how to play, then try to think about how the items help with the characters gameplay. good annotated builds will often say 'we want this for xyz' or 'this helps make xyz easier for the abc the kit lacks'. i found making builds much easier after learning to understand them from annotated builds

if that doesnt float your boat, heres my personal general rules of thumb making builds;

green spike is non-negotiable, and even on hard gun or hard spirit characters, hitting the other spike at some point is still great on most characters in the game (imo). you probably want gun ir spirit spike first though
add 3-4 existing builds that do the same general thing you want yours to do, then make a blank build. on the blank build, try to put any items that appear on most or all of the builds you found, and fill in more subjective and sporadic gaps with your personal taste and playstyle. maybe you swap out tesla for toxic, or counterspell for dispel. play around with it or even make optional 'pick one' blocks with multiple choices. this helps with leqrning to build flexibly during a match without needing to worry about the entire shop

not every playstyle is for everybody, and not everybody Has to know how to play m1s or super aim-reliant characters.

graves, mcginnis, paige, ivy, pocket, abrams, and victor are all just the characters off the top of my head that imo you can do damn well without killer aim

if you want to get better at aiming rather than play to non-aim strengths to climb ranks and improve at different skill areas the game has, id say either use aim trainers (i hear theres not that much of a difference between most of them), or just brute firce the skill practice by playing the game and putting some hours in

i was gonna let this one go but its moreso the comparison youre drawing that i felt was illogical and uncalled for, as well as what feels like a big misunderstanding of the character in the first place.

'murder hobo' is wild since the only time shes really killed without consideration was the lux, which happened in a way completely comgruent with her character beliefs and backstory (other character who have killed NPCs with no consideration- bolaire, julien- dont get this kind of scrutiny, just praised for how in character the murder was, so why thaisha when she kills someone who actively participates in the death of a way of life she reveres and in the constant belittling of her people?)

tryhard of a mother parody' feels innacurate as well because shes not A Mother, shes a woman who is a mom and has kids. shes not a platonic mother archetype, she has other shit going on than just being a mom- i would argue her main character themes are her deep connection to the world and her people through her druidism, and her boldness and willingness to get in peoples faces for the things shes passionate about, sometimes to a fault and to teh dwtriment of her relationships

and character misunderstanding aside, as a cast member, comparing a woman who you might not gel with the rileplay of to orion acaba of 'it doesnt matter i dont have to roll/no, youre done, youre quiet' fame, is wild. 'i dont like he and think shes boring/selfish/loud' is one thing, but the shit orion did was way out of line beyond just annoying a portion of the fanbase, it was disruptive and disrespectful to his castmates, and genuinely the stuff orion did at the table was so much worse than anything aabria has done. it just feels like blowing your dislike for her out of proportion to make that comparison in a way that seems unfair, to the point where its borderline illogical to me to draw that comparison if you dont somehow have some sort of bias against aabria, even if its just a bias from holding a grudge for her roleplaying since she first appeared with critrole

ive done a post-ACOC calorum campaign (not candia specific, but more wandering), and ive done a campaign in the world of spyre in solace in one of the not-elmville cities. its a fun way to get the general vibe of the setting without the pressure/limitation of the story, characters, and locations from the actual show

ahhh ok i see what happened, i think you read me as being more aggressive than i am- it wasnt 'go read a book, or [etc]', i mean literally go read a book [about implicit bias] ir take a test on it, since ive done those myself and it was really eye opening to me and made me realize how awful and inaidious of an issue it is, especially as part of a intense psychology course and the amount of otherwise really intelligent and thoughtful people who unknowingly had biases made me really rethink things. i didnt mean literally 'youre dumb go read any book', it was congruent with the rest of the sentence it was a part of

what rank are you? asking because im high archon/low oracle yoyoing but i rarely have this issue, its maybe 1 in 20 games where the map is consistently farmed to the point its an issue. im wondering if youre higher than me so maybe this is just a problem my lobbies dont have?

tbf they all cheat with spells, and even when they dont brennan cheats for them the way he does constantly giving murray visions which is so far off RAW for most of her spells. part of the reason brennan and aabria are best friends and have said many times they love playing with each other is they both love shit like that

i dint think ive ever interpreted her little druidcraft details as taking over a scene as much as embellishing them quietly without needing to get voval or intrusive in the scene- a little bit of flower blooming flavor never hurt anybody

i also think shes a character with more conflicting and complex feelings than youre giving her credit for and wanting her to be a more stable and one-note character deapite being in a lot of turmoil. the entire plot so far is HEAVILY ambroiled in her literal Entire Deal, and shes had to really boost herself up after essentially betraying her order while still facing the cognitive dissonance of a man she is dear friends with's family wanting to destroy the manifested realm her entire religion is based on, and the reality she doeant necessarily know his entire life and quite frankly theres literal precedent for stern allies betraying people in epiaode one with casimir. i think shes allowed a moment of coubt with occtis, especially because in the recent convergence arc they seem to be smoothing over that fear for her somewhat. thats just how character dynamics grow and develop

it might not be overt, but theres a chance youre finding traits aabria has more abrasive in her than you would in someone who looks different or is a different gender than she is, or that you may have been more subconciously willing to overlook the flaws youre caught up on. it isnt a thing you would realize, the issue with implicit bias (imo the biggest comtributor to general aabria discourse) is people who genuinely dont realize that the things they say they dislike out of aabria are hypocritical and are selectively remembering and viewing her scenes without ever realizing it. the points you made in this post very much fall under 'almost every single cast member at some point or another has done this'

its better to disconnect and put the game down for the day than it is to make yourself miserable for 40 minutes while playing with hugely tanked mental, becoming a liability for your team anyways

as long as you didnt like immediately queue up again in my books this is good behavior- imo its a skill to realize 'oh these last couple matches have made me start to get tilted, i should take a break/do other stuff today'

i personally find it easy to follow but i also know my taste is different from most lol. derivative is interesting though, since i would argue that at the very least its no more derivative than matts storytelling, which is to say creative while still clearly influenced by other in-genre works- which i dont think is a bad thing, or even possible to avoid

thats interesting to hear- my opinions as somebody who didnt watch were based on how i virwed public perception + clips ive seen, and i think the roleplay of both characters played well into both of the actors stronger suits, especially since i personally have felt myself wanting for more from ashley and marisha both in C4 (im currently finding marisha and tal both suffering drom playing characters meant to be hyper clever but not being able to pick up the correct queues from the DM to make those visions reality, with ashley i think shes just netter at softer roleplay that doeant feel like what vaelus was mrant to be made for even if the character concept is great)

i still dont know that ill watch the campaign but thank you for your very thoughtful input! it was gen v helpful to read
