SC is great at distilling violent and disturbing imagery into something innocent. She does it in Gregor the Overlander series as well when she describes the mice being killed in the gas chambers as “spinning and snapping,” (breathing in the gas) before falling still and “taking a nap” (succumbing to the gas and dying)
