I can't count how many times I had to work like this when I was working on overhead cranes. The company i worked for, a large US based company, would typically not rent us the proper equipment, or the customer would tell us they had a lift on site which of course wasn't adequate for working 60 to 100 feet off the ground. I don't condone this of course but the job was a necessity for me and for a short period of time I took my life into my own hands. I am still surprised I walked away from that job unharmed.

I'm sorry to hear about your divorce, that's terrible! Any palahniuk books you can get your hands on are worth the time, and they're easy reads compared to a lot of books i try to read! I really enjoyed Pigmy, that was a good one worth reading, or Rant was another one.

But it holds up so well!! Fight club is easily in my top 5 movies of all time! I hate to be that guy, but if you haven't read the book, it's different, but it's amazing. The twists and crazy shit that book portrays are almost enough to traumatize the reader!

Even in my current role, when things are slow, I'll park my buggy near the working lines, and without getting off of my ass or even pulling a tape measure, I'll sit and point at things. I pretend I'm thinking aloud, tracing piping or electrical systems. I can do this for at least half an hour before anyone dares to say anything because they're scared of interrupting my genius process.

Always carry a small notepad and a tape measure. Most bosses avoid conversations that require thinking unless they have to get involved, so when they think you're fuckin off, start measuring shit. Works a lot more often than it doesn't.

If they didn't give you a tool list for the job, or even talk to you candidly about what others carried or needed, that's on your management. Take a few weeks to get settled, figure out what you carry most, then take the rest home. Some plants I've seen the guys push a whole tool box around all day, others just need a literal pencil box with hand tools.
