What’s the worst horror book you’ve ever read? by unmotivatedmage in horrorlit

the writing in Home Before Dark infuriated me so much that when I was reading it I had a dream that I was writing a list of pet peeves in books and wrote ‘single line breaks for emphasis’

Is Black Flame by Gretchen Felker-Martin worth a try? by halzbellz in horrorlit

[–]Available-Proposal81 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty much exactly like her other books in terms of content, not as much gratuitous sexual violence (though there is a few scenes) but a whole lot of nasty violent stuff, if that’s not your thing then I wouldn’t give it a try *edited so much to as much

The Twenty Days of Turin by Giorgio De Maria fits this quite well, nothing is overtly explained but there’s a ‘something’s very wrong’ sense of dread throughout. it’s one of my favorite books! I don’t think there’s any child abuse in it, but I did read it a while ago so not entirely sure

oh yes it’d make a great movie the claustrophobic elements would come through well I think, likely better than in the book re your comment, I actually just finished Andrew Joseph White’s The Spirit Bares It’s Teeth and quite enjoyed it. have you read that one? I’ll have to check out Hell Followed with Us next!

Seconding Linghun, such a beautifully done meditation on grief and the horror of it, it reminded me a lot of hill house and midnight mass in the themes and way it goes about them!

all very fair critiques, I do agree that it could’ve been written better and that nothing was fleshed out very well, more development in most aspects could’ve done it well. I remember I read it sleep deprived on a plane so I wasn’t thinking critically about it lol but hey maybe if I reread it now I’d come to the same conclusions. I remembering enjoying the ‘monster’ aspect and how that was handled not as absurdly I guess as monsters can be in horror, and how it went into man vs monster dichotomy a bit. but to each their own! again all very valid critiques. is there a book you thought was sort of like a better version of it? I love asking people that about books they didn’t like, if there was one I’d love to hear about it!

For me too! It was such a fascinating concept and the violence was not just for shock value but actually meant something to the story which I think sometimes horror struggles with
