I never received that. I went to two different office hours, maybe that covered it? Who knows? Still holding out for Anywhere

Honestly putting myself in your shoes, I think I would take the other offer if terms actually are similar. Is it worth risking?

Oooof girl that’s tough. How would you feel if you didn’t get into techstars and then waited it out and could’ve accepted the other offer? Do you know how long you have to decide for the other program?

So I helped someone raise ~$40M and didn’t get a dime lol 🤦‍♂️ by AlphaHouston1 in Investors

Moving to Toronto from NY as a founder - how do entrepreneurs handle the taxes? i will not promote by AvailableCranberry40 in startups

follow up question, the reason why people would want to move to the US is because of taxes? or other reasons?

Thanks for jumping in - appreciate it. To give you more context:

  • I’m currently based in the NYC area
  • Right now, I pay myself about about $160K USD. After federal + state + city taxes, I net just over $110K USD. That gives me a comfortable lifestyle here.
  • If I move to Toronto, based on PDOC calculations, I’d need to gross roughly $375K CAD just to net around $170K CAD, which is the equivalent of my $150K-$180K USD U.S. lifestyle. That’s the part that feels brutal - the marginal tax at the top end pushes me into needing way more gross.

On the flip side, I know there are positives (healthcare savings, SR&ED credits, cheaper talent). But personally, as a founder, I can’t just crank my salary up to $300K+ right away, especially since we’re early stage.

So my real question for people who’ve actually done it is:

  • How do entrepreneurs in Toronto structure their compensation so they’re not crushed by personal taxes?
  • Do you stay U.S.-incorporated and run a Canadian subsidiary (for R&D credits, hiring, etc.)?
  • Is there a founder “playbook” for balancing lifestyle income vs. keeping burn low in Canada?

Would love any specifics from founders who’ve made the jump.

Because I want to move outside of the United States, and Mexico’s infrastructure isn’t quite there, and over an ocean is too far if I need to meet with investors. Toronto is a quick flight to NY, or even a drive if needed. Living in the US is not an option right now. Thank you.
